Overview
The JpGU, or Japan Geoscience Union, is a public interest incorporated association as defined under the Japanese law. We are an academic union that covers all the disciplines of Earth and planetary sciences and related fields. Our members are individuals who are researchers, engineers, educators, science communicators, students and the general public with interests in the science and academic societies concerned with the full range of subjects covered by Earth and planetary sciences. As of September 30, 2020, the membership of JpGU consists of over 10,000 individual members and 51 society members.
We represent the Japanese community of Earth and planetary scientists, promote the science, provide a platform for communications among the members, coordinate internationally, and reach out to the public; thus contributing to the advancement and dissemination of Earth and planetary sciences. JpGU supports international discussion and exchange that contributes to driving the boundaries of our science and understanding further forward and stimulate moving forwards the leading of science and will help invigorate the global Earth and planetary science community. We firmly believe that the advancement of our science will contribute to the good well-being of the human race.
The scientific functions of JpGU are currently conducted by five independent Science Sections. They are: space and planetary sciences, atmospheric and hydrographic sciences, human geosciences, solid Earth sciences, and biogeosciences. Our main activities are the annual scientific meeting held in spring and the publication of our peer-reviewed journal (Progress in Earth and Planetary Sciences). Other activities are targeted towards promotion of the science and public outreach steered by various committees and by publication of quarterly Newsletters.
