Kaoru Sumi is a professor at Future University Hakodate, Japan. She received her Ph.D. in engineering from the University of Tokyo. Prior to joining academia, she had eight years of industry experience at KDDI and Mitsubishi Corporation. Her current research interests include intelligent systems, human-agent interaction, human-robot interaction, affective computing, persuasive technology, artificial intelligence in education, serious games, XR learning environments, and interactive digital storytelling.

She has held research and academic positions at ATR MI&C Research Laboratories, Communications Research Laboratory, Osaka University, the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, and Hitotsubashi University. Her research has focused on human-computer interaction, knowledge engineering, affective and persuasive technologies, and the application of artificial intelligence to learning, communication, and human behavior.

She currently serves as Associate Editor for Behaviour & Information Technology (Taylor & Francis) and Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence (Section: AI for Human Learning and Behavior Change). She is also Guest Editor for the Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence Research Topic "Next-Generation Persuasive Technologies for Human–AI Interaction and Behavior Change" and the JoVE Methods Collection "Interactive Technologies for Behavior Change and Emotional Engagement." She is also involved in JoVE as an Editorial Board Member.

She is the General Chair of Persuasive 2026 and Volume Editor of the conference proceedings, published in Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science. She actively contributes to the IEEE community as Coordinator of IEEE Japan Council WIE (2025–) and Chair of IEEE Sapporo WIE (2020–). She is a Senior Member of both ACM and IEEE.

Her book, Affective Learning and Serious Games, was published by CRC Press, Taylor & Francis, in 2026. The book explores how affective technologies, serious games, human–AI interaction, XR learning environments, and interactive systems can support behavioral change, learning engagement, and educational experiences.
