海洋物理学者で、南極海(南大洋)が専門。船舶観測、自動プロファイリングフロート、バイオロギング等による現場海洋観測、衛星リモートセンシング、数値シミュレーション、統計データ解析などを駆使し、南極海の動態と、その気候システムにおける熱・淡水・炭素・物質循環機構への影響を研究。海洋の大気・海氷・棚氷との相互作用や海洋乱流などの複雑な物理過程の還元的な理解と、数十年から数百年スケールの気候変動の解明を目指す。海洋グライダーや機械学習などの活用を通じて、海洋モニタリングシステムの持続可能性向上にも注力。

研究背景

南極海は、大西洋・インド洋・太平洋を繋ぐ唯一の海である。南極海が取り囲む南極氷床は、地球の氷の9割を占めると同時に、地上に存在する淡水の7割を擁し、全球海面上昇約58m相当の淡水量を誇る。地球温暖化に伴う熱の9割以上は海洋が吸収しているが、実は人為起源の熱の7割、CO2の4割は南極海が吸収している。そうした気候学的な重要性に反して、南極海の現場観測データは極めて少なく、数値モデルの制約が不十分である。その結果、南極海の振る舞いと海洋-氷床相互作用の不確かさは、数十年から数百年単位の将来気候・海水準予測において、最も大きな誤差要因となっている。
