– ABOUT THIS COURSE
It is becoming ever more important to reconsider the intrinsic value of Japanese culture from diverse perspectives and disseminate the findings with people from vastly different cultural backgrounds and areas of expertise. This course will examine some of the specialized fields in which Tokyo Geidai educates its students and conduct research to help students understand the doctrines of each field—in English—in a systematic manner with a historical perspective.
For the Spring Semester of 2024, we will explore various fields such as Art, crafts, architecture, animation, design, traditional Japanese music (hogaku), architecture, ceramics, etc…
This course offers Japanese students the opportunity to reexamine the arts and culture of their own country from an international perspective and gives international students the opportunity to study the general outline of Japanese arts and culture that may lie outside their usual fields of study.
The series will be taught through lectures with an emphasis on critical thinking and discussions.
Basically, this class is conducted in English. However, for those students with insufficient English skills, we try to provide as much support as we can. Everyone is welcome, provided they are students at Tokyo University of the Arts, regardless of whether they are Japanese or international students.
