When you come to a fork in the road, take it
Throughout my geology career, I have been faced with choices, how best to spend my time. Shortly before leaving for
the Indian Himalaya on my first research project in 1980, I helped start a consulting company, Dihedral Exploration,
specializing in "extreme terrain mineral exploration". I went to grad school to continue the research. Meanwhile,
Dihedral was a success, involving great people. For many years I followed both roads, though ultimately I chose research.
Now, studying carbon mineralization during weathering, I am faced with similar decisions. Continue with basic research
on reactive fluid transport on Earth and Mars? Or devote more time to applied research on CO2 removal from air (CDR) and permanent storage,
to help address the global climate emergency? At the end of the talk, the audience can vote on what I should do.z
