Biography
Mr Bin Hu received his Ph.D degree in School of Energy and Power Engineering of Xi’an Jiaotong University. He was a visiting scholar in Department of Mechanical Engineering of UT Dallas in 2013. Now; he is an Associate Research Fellow of Institute of Refrigeration and Cryogenics in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. His research interests include the industrial heat pump with waste heat recovery, Low GWP high temperature heat pump and air-source heat pump steam generation technology.
He has dericted and participated in 18 projects such as National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Key R&D Program of China, open funding of State Key Laboratory, and published more than 30 papers. In 2019, he won the first prize of science and technology progress of the Ministry of education and the excellent paper award of China Society of Engineering thermophysics.

Biography
Dr. Gerwin Drexler-Schmid studied technical physics at TU Wien and wrote his PhD thesis there on hydrogen storage. During his studies, he already worked at the AIT as a freelancer in the Advanced Materials and Aerospace Technologies department and moved to the AIT Center for Energy after completing his studies.
At AIT, he has been Senior Research Engineer and Business Manager for Decarbonisation and Digitalisation of Industry since 2020. Technological research focuses in the last ten years included absorption and high-temperature heat pumps, thermal management of batteries, use of augmented reality for heat pump acoustics, steam storage, methods and strategies for decarbonisation.
In his 12 years at AIT, Gerwin Drexler-Schmid has led a large number of scientific projects and published papers. In addition, he taught for several years at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien.
Gerwin Drexler-Schmid is a member of the Austrian Physical Society and is internationally networked through his activities in IETS annexes and in the European Energy Research Alliance.

Emilio Navarro-Peris obtain its degree in Physics in the University of Valencia in 2000 and later, he received his Ph.D. in Energy Technology in the Technical University of Valencia in 2007. His research interests are related to heat pumps, from their components to their integration in complex systems, the use of natural refrigerants and energy efficiency in buildings. He has published more than 50 articles in international journals and has participated in more than 30 public research projects.
Nowadays he is Associate Professor of the Applied Thermodynamics Department of the Technical University of Valencia and Deputy Director of the Research Institute for Energy Engineering.

Didier Coulomb was born on September 30, 1960 in Paris, France.
He is a qualified engineer of the Ecole Polytechnique de Paris (1982) and the Ecole Nationale du Génie Rural, des Eaux et des Forêts (1984), and of the Institut des Stratégies Industrielles (1995).
After internships, in particular in the Food industry, he worked for the French Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in the North of France and Paris (Departmental Directorate for Agriculture and Forestry, Commissariat Général au Plan, General Department for food questions) in which he was more specifically in charge of technology and innovation (1984-1993).
He then worked at the French Research Ministry, in particular as Deputy Director for innovation and technological development (1994-2002).
He was then General Secretary of the CIRAD (Centre for General Cooperation in Agronomic Research for Development), a French centre of research for developing countries, till 2004.
Since, Didier Coulomb is the Director General of the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR), an intergovernmental organisation comprising 58 Member countries and many private and corporate members.
The International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR) is a forum for scientific and technical exchange of information in all refrigeration areas and applications (food, medicine, air conditioning, transport, energy...), employing 12 people, with a worldwide network of 500 experts and dealing with:
- Conference organisation.
- Communications for United Nations organs and global conferences on the environment (climate change, ozone depletion) and food.
- Publications of journals, guides, courses, informatory notes, constitution and management of databases.

Constantin Zenz studied industrial and mechanical engineering at Vienna University of Technology, Austria and Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. For his master thesis, he numerically investigated novel expansion devices for high temperature heat pumps at the Austrian Institute of Technology. Mr. Zenz is currently a PhD student and research associate at Vienna University of Technology, focusing on multiphysical modeling of laser material processing.

Andreas Längauer has been working as a research engineer at ecop Technologies since 2016. He deals with the thermodynamic cycle and performs calculations using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for a Rotation Heat Pump. Furthermore, a central element of the activities is the cooperation with research institutions, the handling of funded projects and the presentation of research results at various conferences and meetings.

Dr. Bo Shen is a research scientist in the Building Equipment Research Group, Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL), USA. He joined ORNL since 2010. He focused heat pump system development an modelling, and studying low GWP and natural refrigerants. He had over 20 years’ experience in HVAC area. Before joining ORNL, he graduated from Purdue University, Indiana with a PHD degree, and had worked in the Trane Company and Hitachi.

Xiaobing Liu is a staff scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). He has been the Principal Investigator of many ground source heat pump (GSHP) related R&D projects at ORNL since 2009, including software tools to facilitate simulation-based design for GSHP systems, new ground heat exchanger designs, and in-depth case studies of GSHP systems. Dr. Liu served as the research chair at ASHRAE TC 6.8 (Geothermal Energy Utilization and Energy Recovery) as well as at the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association. He received the Ritter Von Rittinger Award (as a group member) from International Energy Agency in 2017, and the Distinguished Service Award of ASHRAE in 2020.

Bamdad Bahar is currently president of Xergy Inc. A clean energy, high technology enterprise founded in 2009. Xergy is the world leader in the development and commercialization of advanced ionic membranes and devices based on these membranes – including electrochemical compressors and other electrochemical and permeation/pervaporation products. Xergy has several major development programs with F500 companies using electrochemical devices, advanced membranes, and membrane tubes for HVAC applications.
Xergy won the GE Ecomagination award in 2011; and has been a finalist in numerous Cleantech awards globally. Prior to starting Xergy Inc., Bamdad was the General Manager of Teledyne Energy Systems, a division of Teledyne Technologies Inc. Bamdad transformed this unit from a slow growth division to 20 times it`s valuation within 2 years while creating a unit of key strategic value to Teledyne Inc. Prior to joining Teledyne, Bamdad was the business leader of W.L. Gore’s Fuel Cell Products unit, which he founded based on patents for products he co-invented for Fuel Cells and other electrochemical devices. He led the unit from zero to 20ドル Million in sales within 3 years with record profitability. The products based on his inventions have now generated over 1ドル Billion Dollars in revenue.
Bamdad has been an active member of the International Hydrogen Energy Association since 1982. He is the inventor or co-inventor of over 100 patents in the field of membranes and electrochemistry. He has a BSc (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from Queen Mary College (1985), London University and an M.S. from Columbia University (New York, 1990). Mr. Iwatsubo joined the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry in 1982. He engaged in research and development of high-performance heat pumps, and in particular, belongs to the research and development project team of high-performance hot water supply heat pumps for home use, and contributed greatly to the practical application of "Eco-Cute" in 2001.
Mr. Iwatsubo has been a member of NEDO since 2015, and is the delegate of Japan for the IEA heat pump and technical collaboration program(TCP), and the project manager of the R&D project for innovative Thermal Management Materials and Technologies.

Ji Hwan Jeong is a professor of School of Mechanical Engineering at Pusan National University, Korea. He graduated in nuclear engineering at Seoul National University in 1988 and then obtained MS and Ph.D. degree from KAIST in 1990 and 1995, respectively. His research focuses on two-phase flow, heat exchangers, vapor compression refrigeration system and heat pump. He serves academic society as a vice president of Commission B2, International Institute of Refrigeration, and delegate of Assembly for International Heat Transfer Conference.

Carsten Wemhoener graduated in mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen, Germany. Since 2012 he is working as professor for building and energy technologies at the OST Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences, former HSR in Rapperswil, Switzerland. In his career he chaired different national and international research and development projects, including different Annex projects in the IEA Technology Collaboration Programme on Heat Pumping Technologies (HPT). He also contributed to the CEN standardisation in the frame of the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive EPBD. His present research is related to heat pumps, system integration, high performance buildings and energy-efficient technologies for the built environment.

Tor-Martin Tveit is responsible for the technical development of a very high temperature heat pump (VHTHP) at the Norwegian company Olvondo Technology AS. The key focus of the development is to making the heat pump a better alternative for heating and cooling in industries like chemical processes, food and beverages, and pharmaceutical industries.
Mr. Tveit holds the degree of Doctor of Science in Technology in energy technology and environmental protection from Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. In 2017 he was awarded the title of Docent in technology for energy systems by Åbo Akademi University, Finland.

Dr. Signhild Gehlin works as technical expert and CEO of the Swedish Geoenergy Center in Sweden. She graduated as Engineer in Environmental Planning and Design at Luleå University of Technology, and holds a Ph.D. in Water Resources Engineering from Luleå University of Technology. Her research has focused on thermal response test (TRT), undergound thermal energy storage and ground source heat pump systems. She is the Operating Agent of IEA HPT Annex 52 "Long-term measurements of GSHP system performance in commercial, institutional and multi-family buildings".

Dr. Thibault Péan was born in Angers, France in 1990. He is currently holding a tenure track position at the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) in Barcelona, Spain, where his research focuses on the energy flexibility of buildings, the smart management of heat pumps and the dynamic simulations of the thermal behavior of buildings and HVAC systems. His activity is split between European competitive projects and projects in collaboration with the industry. Thibault obtained his PhD in Automatic Control from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) in 2020, which was funded through the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions of the European Union. He holds an MSc in Architectural Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), obtained in 2014. He graduated after a double degree with the École Centrale de Nantes in France where he also obtained his Engineer’s Diploma in 2014.

I’m a graduate student for a doctoral degree majoring in mechanical engineering and working as a research associate at the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories at the Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN in the US with Professor Dr.-Ing. Eckhard A. Groll as my PI. My area of interest is thermal comfort and sciences, specifically in HVAC&R technology.
I've conducted my bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in mechanical engineering with a focus on thermodynamics at the University of Kassel in Germany with Professor Dr.-Ing. Andrea Luke as my main PI. During my studies I have worked as a research & teaching assistant at the Institute of Thermodynamics at the University of Kassel. My bachelor thesis was about a complete pressure loss investigation, including all pressures losses for single-phase and two-phase flows, in an ORC unit and the impact on the efficiency including a simulation model in python. My research as a research assistant was about installing, testing and improving an ORC unit.
I’ve worked as a visiting research associate the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories at the Purdue University from January to December 2019 during my master studies. My master thesis was about installing, testing and improving residential heat pump systems with Professor Groll and Professor Luke as my PIs.
I began with my doctoral degree in mechanical engineering with a focus on thermodynamics with Professor Groll as my PI at the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories this year. My main research is designing, testing and improving a transcritical CO2 unit.
I’ve completed engineering internships at BMW in Munich and Mercedes-Benz in Rastatt during my studies in Germany.

Jae Dong Chung received his B.Eng. and M. Eng. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Seoul National University, Korea in 1990 and 1992, respectively. He was awarded a Ph.D. degree from Seoul National University, Korea, in 1996 under the supervision of Prof. Joon Sik Lee. During his Ph.D. study, he developed continuum model for solidification process of binary mixtures which were published in Int. J. Heat Mass Transfer, vol.40, 1997 and vol.42, 1999, Numerical Heat Transfer, vol.36A, 1999. Since 2001, Dr. Chung has been a full Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Sejong University, Korea. His research interests include sensible, latent and thermos-chemical energy storage system and heat-driven refrigeration system such as desiccant and adsorption cooling. On those topics, he published about 160 refereed papers. He served or is serving as an editorial member of International Journal of Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration and Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology. He also serves as vise-president of Korea Institute of Plant Engineering & Construction, the Society of Air-Conditioning and Refrigerating Engineers of Korea, and Thermal Division of the Korea Society of Mechanical Engineers. For international conferences, he chairs International Conference of Saving Energy in Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning.

Minsung Kim received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Seoul National University, Korea in 1996 and 1998, respectively. He was awarded a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Seoul National University, Korea, in 2002 under the supervision of Prof. Min Soo Kim. During his Ph.D. study, he developed useful tools for heat pumps, such as on/off design and dynamic simulation model. Since 2003, he joined Dr. Domanski group in National Institute of Standards and Technology. He developed fault detection and diagnosis system with machine learning algorithm. In 2007, he involved in Korea Institute of Energy Research. He developed large industrial heat pumps for high temperature generation. Since 2014, he has contributed as a national delegate of Korea in IEA HPT TCP Executive Committee. Since 2015, Dr. Kim joined Chung-Ang University, and now working as a full professor and a chair of the School of Energy Systems Engineering. His research interest covers heat pump system for next generations including membrane application, high temperature system, and isothermal compression system.

1993-Present: employed in Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry. I am working on issues related to heat pump technology such as carbon dioxide heat pump water heater. Especially, I’m an initial member of world-famous ECO CUTE development project team. I received "Doctor of Engineering" from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2008. Recently, I’m interested in heat pumps for industrial sector.

Yong Hwan Eom
Mr. Eom is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Seoul National University and works for LG Electronics. His research interest is the deep learning-based FDD and performance improvement for heat pump systems. He earned a master's degree from Seoul National University and joined LG Electronics in 2002.

Carsten Wemhoener graduated in mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen, Germany. Since 2012 he is working as professor for building and energy technologies at the OST Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences, former HSR in Rapperswil, Switzerland. In his career he chaired different national and international research and development projects, including different Annex projects in the IEA Technology Collaboration Programme on Heat Pumping Technologies (HPT). He also contributed to the CEN standardisation in the frame of the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive EPBD. His present research is related to heat pumps, system integration, high performance buildings and energy-efficient technologies for the built environment.
