• Select a play:

you may want to pay attention to the type of movies community residents like. Look for a plot with lots of action.

• Let students divide tasks:

  type scripts

  design, build, and paint sets

  operate lights

  apply make-up

  create costumes

  learn roles and lines

  direct.

• Perform first for the student body.
• If the production is well-received, perform for parents.

Variations

• Have students write their own play on a subject of interest to themselves.
• Do dramatic version of local traditional stories.
• Try integrating themes from a favorite TV show (e.g., the interplanetary wars between Cylons and Vipers) into the Christmas play:

  get a videotape of the TV show so that you and the class can get an idea of the sorts of props you might make

  in writing the play, select anecdotal material which relates to community events

  build spacecraft in art class; learn lines in language arts classes; build sets during shop; during music class, practice a Christmas carol to sing at the end of the play.

• Try a musical; tap local musical talent.
• Do as a film or videotape.
