In preparation for kicking around TME, "The Machine Emulator" I installed NetBSD, which I have been meaning to check out anyway. Not much to see, the CD image is very minimal, but here are some screen shots.
Bunch of X-Terminals
Well, it does come with X.org, but not much else. It starts up TWM
(Tiny Window Manager) and a couple of X-terminal windows.
KDE and Gnome are both available as downloadable packages for NetBSD.
Old X Applications
X.org includes a few other classic X applications. I guess these are
included to provide minimal functionality when a standard desktop is not
installed, although it seems like some of these would have been eliminated
or improved over the years. Then again "edlin" is still in 32-bit Windows
7.
TWM icons
Using TWM windows can be minimized to small rectangles. When displayed,
the TWM Icon Manager lists all open windows. Windows can be moved to the
front or back, or otherwise manipulated using options from the right-click
desktop menu.

shutdown -h now
And finally shutting down NetBSD, with the shutdown text message going
out to all connected terminals.
