COMBAT COLIN wins award for Best Independent / Small Press Comic!

The 2019 Comic Scene Awards results were announced yesterday and I'm very pleased to tell you that Combat Colin has won the award for Best Independent / Small Press Comic! It was nominated against some great comics, all of which deserve your support, and I'm very grateful for those of you who voted for Combat Colin to win. Humour comics are sometimes overlooked in comics awards so this was a very nice surprise.

The above logo will appear on the cover of the next issue which I'm hoping to publish in late February (or later, depending on finances). It'll also appear on the cover of issue 4 when that goes to a second printing.

Meanwhile, if you haven't tried Combat Colin yet, all four issues published so far are still available exclusively from my online shop. You won't find them anywhere else!

The superb Down the Tubes site won the Best Comic Media Award, and Enniskillen Comic Fest won Best Comic Con. Very well deserved! Congratulations to all the winners and runners up. The full results of the inaugural Comic Scene Awards can be seen in the latest issue of Comic Scene (No.11) which is currently available to buy as a digital download and the print edition will be in the shops on Thursday 19th December. Combat Colin comic orders update

Thank you to everyone who's ordered copies of my Combat Colin comics recently. I've had a few delays in sending them out (holiday, deadlines, and now a chest infection) but most have been dispatched and the rest are ready to go this week. Thank you for your patience!

Several of you have ordered back issues too, which is great. This meant that Combat Colin No.2 had to go to a second printing, and it looks like issue 1 will have to go to a third printing soon too! The new printings all have matt-laminated covers so they look really nice.

In case you'd somehow missed my previous plugs for these comics, I'm reprinting all my old Combat Colin strips that originally appeared in Action Force and The Transformers back in 1987 to 1991. We're currently at issue 4 and there'll be two more issues next year to complete the run. All the pages are scanned from my original art, where possible. (Sadly, some of my later pages went missing from the Marvel UK offices, or were inadvertently destroyed after use, so those pages will be scanned from the comics.)

If you haven't ordered the comics yet, you can get them exclusively from me at my web shop at this link:

Combat Colin No.4 is out now, and you'll be able to buy it exclusively from my table at the London Film and Comic Con this weekend at Olympia, Friday to Sunday, Table 28, upstairs at the Comic Zone! Not available in the shops!

Not exactly a workshop, but more of a freewheeling discussion about life in humour comics, how it's changed over the years, advice on breaking in, etc. I'm doing this on my own so I hope you'll turn up and support it!

Sunday 28th July:
4.00 P.M. - "Creating World for Children".
A panel discussion alongside Jess Bradley, Kate Brown, Grant Perkins, and David Leach talking about our work in kids' comics and our thoughts on the industry.

LFCC is always a busy event so it's going to be a hectic weekend! See you there!

New merchandise with Combat Colin, Derek the Troll, and more!

These days, comics characters aren't just confined to the strips. They're often part of a multi-media expansion too, including merchandise. I've decided to venture into that field with my characters and I've set up a shop on Redbubble to sell clothing, mugs, stickers, phone skins... and more!

Yes, now you can buy a Derek the Troll T-shirt, a Combat Clock, a groovy jazz tote bag and other items! The sales are entirely handled by Redbubble. You order from them, they manufacture the goods and post them to you, and I get a small percentage. (And it is very small too, but Redbubble are doing all the work so that's fair enough.)

Items are made to order so there's no surplus. I've intended to produce some merchandise like this for a while now, but as I don't drive and travel to shows by train it's difficult to carry too much stock (along with a suitcase full of comics) to conventions. This solves the problem, with Redouble handling the merchandise while I just focus on the comics. Bear in mind this means that I won't have any of these items with me at conventions, so if you want a T-shirt, clock, stickers, etc you have to order from Redbubble.
Interested? Please have a browse and purchase anything you'd like from the Redbubble website here:

Click on each photo at that website to see the full range in that category.
What do you think of this latest venture? Let me know by posting a comment below!

This original COMBAT COLIN art could be yours!

I don't sell my original 1980s pages of Combat Colin but here's an opportunity to obtain a genuine piece of Combat Colin artwork. Yes, it's a brand new piece I've drawn, and it's currently on eBay for the next week:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/COMBAT-COLIN-original-artwork-by-Lew-Stringer/202513631742
It's drawn in black ink on sturdy, quality Bristol Board, and measures 19cm by 17cm. I've given it a winter theme to make it topical! I won't be selling any more pieces of art this year so this could be an ideal Christmas present for the Combat Colin fan in your life, or for yourselves!

I've signed it, and will be happy to add a dedication to the winning bidder, or to whoever they want it personalised to. (No extra cost, naturally.)

I will of course package it securely to send to the winning bidder.

All bids are very much appreciated. Good luck!

Combat Colin No.3 to debut at Nottingham Comic Con this Saturday

This Saturday, 20th October, is the date for Nottingham Comic Con, a one-day event that's totally dedicated to comics and their creators. One of the comics on offer will be Combat Colin No.3, which will debut exclusively at the event.

I'll be bringing along copies of the comic to sell on my table, and they won't be available anywhere else. (You'll be able to buy them from my online shop later next week.)

Combat Colin No.3 is another 40 page issue (4 colour covers and 36 black and white interiors, U.S. comic book size) for £3.50. It reprints all the Combat Colin strips that originally appeared in Marvel UK's Transformers comic from July 1989 to February 1990.

This issue reaches the era of Combat Colin stories where the strip really hit its stride, becoming even more fantastic in its themes with battles against monsters and aliens. It sees the introduction of The Gunge, The Brain, The Amazing Dave, and more, explains how the Atomic Underpants work, sees Colin trapped in The Place of No Return, and ends with an adventure on Mars! Fast-paced daft adventures for all ages.

I'll also be bringing along copies of Combat Colin 1 and 2, and Derek the Troll to the convention so see you at Nottingham Comic Con this Saturday! More info about the event here:

Combat Colin cover preview

Here's an advance peek at the cover to Combat Colin No.3, which will be another 40 page issue. I've just sent the pages to the printers so hopefully it'll be out in time for Nottingham Comic Con on 20th October.

This issue reprints the stories from the latter half of 1989 and early 1990, when the strip saw Colin encounter weirder villains than ever before. More news soon, but if you're missing the first two issues you can order them from me here:

See you at TFNation this weekend!

Many years ago I was a regular contributor to The Transformers comic, back when it was published by Marvel UK. Not on the lead strip itself, but creating humour relief strips. Robo-Capers ran for 150 issues or so, and was then replaced by Combat Colin for several years.

Anyway, this weekend I've been invited as one of the guests to TFNation at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole (next to the NEC and Birmingham International airport). The Transformers are still as popular as ever, although I've never really followed the franchise so come along and ask me about Combat Colin!

It should be good fun, and a change from the usual comic cons I've attended. I hope to see some of you there!

Other comics guests include Mike Collins, John-Paul Bove, Jack Lawrence and more. Here's the info:

The GUNGE is coming!

As I said over on my other blog, Combat Colin No.3 has been delayed slightly due to my commitments on my mainstream comic strips, but it should be ready by late June to mid-July. Once again it'll have 40 pages reprinting the classic Combat Colin strips from The Transformers comics of the late 1980s.

With this issue, we enter the time when the strip returned to its full page status, and the plots became even more fantastic in tone. Here's an example above! (This page originally appeared in The Transformers No.238, back in 1989.)

You can see a different preview strip on my other blog!
http://lewstringercomics.blogspot.co.uk/2018/05/combat-colin-no3-news-update.html

If you're interested in buying the first two issues of Combat Colin they're still in stock and available directly from me at my website:
http://lewstringer.com/page7.htm

Don't forget that if you're a fan of The Transformers comic I'll be one of the guests at TFNation in August!

Combat Colin No.2 is out now!

Only available exclusively from me, Combat Colin No.2 has arrived from the printers and is now available to buy!

As with the first issue, No.2 has 40 pages packed with classic Combat Colin strips from the late 1980s. This issue starts with the ones when The Transformers and Action Force merged into one comic, and features almost 70 half page strips running from February 1988 to July 1989.

You'll see Combat Colin and his sidekick Semi-Automatic Steve encounter villains such as Madprof and Mr.Magno for the first time, plus the return of the evil Aunt Arctic of the Antarctic, the secret of the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot, the introduction of the Giggly Sisters and much more!

Combat Colin was a strip I created for the Marvel UK comics in 1987 and when it ended in 1991, Marvel returned the rights to me. Most of the strips in issue 2 have been scanned directly from my original artwork, and I've added dates to the foot of every strip so you know where and when it first appeared.

Combat Colin No.2 has 40 pages comprising full colour covers and black and white interiors. Only £3.50 plus postage, and can be ordered here:

Combat Colin No.2 will be published in late January and will be available to buy directly from me, either by mail order or at conventions I'll be attending in 2018. I'll post an update on this blog and on social media when it's available to order so don't worry, you won't miss it!

Meanwhile, on my OTHER blog...

If you're new to the Blimey! blog you may not know that I have another blog I regularly update too. That's lewstringercomics , which is focused on my own comics work, covering all the news about my current strips as well as showing material I've done over the 34 years of my career (and sometimes even material older than that from my fanzine days).

If you're interested, hop over there and have a rummage around to see the various stuff I've posted over the years! Thanks for your time.
