WMU's Education for Professional Excellence (EPEx) programme provides an academic offering to professionals in the maritime and ocean sectors and is specifically designed to equip individuals with specialized knowledge and insight for optimal success in Maritime Affairs. EPEx offers a portfolio of short courses for government officials and industry professionals who wish to gain a deeper understanding of maritime and ocean topics.
The EPEx Maritime Administration portfolio is a programme targeting professionals with an interest in maritime administration, governance and effective work in international organizations in the maritime field.
Modules in the EPEx Maritime Administration
The EPEx in Maritime Administration is divided into two modules:

The Essentials of Maritime Administration course is created for executives and leaders who are looking to expand their foundational understanding of maritime affairs. This one-week course offers an intensive overview of critical issues to the maritime industry, with the goal of equipping participants with the essential aspects of maritime administration.
This course provides daily learning activities covering diverse topics such as safety, security, marine environment protection, maritime law, policy, and seafarers, among others. The learning activities in this module will enable participants to engage in an interactive session with a panel of high-level experts to discuss current practices of maritime administration and options to improve administrative performance. The module includes practical, hands-on examples and the instructors will provide full seminar notes to the participants. The daily organized learning activities will take place from 9am - 3pm with a 30-minute morning coffee break and a 1-hour lunch to be organized and provided by WMU.
Designed for executives, leaders, or individuals who have completed EPEX MA-01, this multi-dimensional, one-week course is designed to provide participants from maritime administrations or analogous organizations a set of essential knowledge and skills that will facilitate productive participation in meetings, and optimize participation in deliberations, at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), International Labour Organization (ILO), and other intergovernmental organizations in order to more effectively impact global maritime safety, environmental protection, security, and efficiency.
The course provides daily learning activities covering diverse topics including the relevance of the IMO, ILO, other intergovernmental organizations, and industry associations in maritime affairs. The final day consists of simulation IMO meetings led by international experts, including the former chair of the IMO Legal Committee, providing practical insights regarding participation in international deliberations. The course includes practical, hands-on examples and the instructors will provide full seminar notes to the participants. The daily organized learning activities will take place from 9am- 3pm with a 30-minute morning coffee break and a 1-hour lunch to be organized and provided by WMU.
The Maritime Administration modules are delivered by an expert WMU faculty team together with experts from the International Maritime Organization, maritime administrations, and other partner institutions.

The Essentials of Maritime Administration module is designed primarily for key and senior maritime administration personnel who have little or no prior expertise in shipping and maritime affairs.
The Maritime Administrations and International Organizationsmodule is designed primarily for key and senior maritime administration personnel who already have prior knowledge and expertise in shipping and maritime affairs, or individuals who have completed Module EPEX MA-01 Essentials of Maritime Administration.
Participants are awarded a Certificate of Accomplishment, and an official programme showing the topics of the module(s) taken.
Module EPEx MA-01:
There are no academic prerequisites for participation in the EPEx modules, however, it is preferred that participants have completed their education to at least a Bachelor's level and/or have several years of professional experience.
Module EPEx MA-02:
Participants are required to either have completed Module EPEx MA-01 or possess relevant maritime administration experience. The latter may be demonstrated by providing a CV, personal statement, or a letter of recommendation that clarifies their professional experience in the maritime field.
This programme is delivered in English and participants must be able to follow the programme delivery in this language.
The EPEx programme will be delivered again in 2026.
