Postgraduate Maritime & Oceans Education
WMU is a global center for advanced education and research, offering high-quality professional education and providing our students with unique insight into the maritime and ocean sectors. One of the reasons for the establishment of the University was to increase the number of highly qualified specialist maritime personnel in all countries across the world, and in particular developing countries. The University has adopted an equal opportunities policy and positively welcomes applications from women, who are currently under-represented in the field of maritime and ocean studies and employment. The University is active across a broad spectrum of postgraduate programmes:
Degree programmes
MSc in Maritime Affairs (Malmö)

WMU offers a postgraduate programme in Maritime Affairs, leading to a Master of Science or a Postgraduate Diploma, in 7 specializations.

PhD in Maritime Affairs

WMU’s PhD programme offers students the opportunity to carry out research across the maritime field, but with an emphasis on issues related to the International Maritime Organization’s mission of maritime safety, security and marine environmental protection.

MSc in Maritime Affairs (Shanghai)

The Master of Science in Maritime Affairs, with a specialization in International Transport and Logistics (Shipping & Finance), is delivered in Shanghai, China by WMU in collaboration with Shanghai Maritime University (SMU).

MSc in Maritime Affairs (Dalian)

The Master of Science in Maritime Affairs, with a specialization in Maritime Safety and Environmental Management, is delivered in Dalian, China, by WMU in collaboration with Dalian Maritime University (DMU).

MPhil in International Maritime Law and Ocean Policy

The innovative MPhil programme has been designed in partnership by IMO’s two sister institutions, WMU and the IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) in Malta.

PGD in Marine Insurance Law & Practice

This long-established programme was developed for professionals in the marine insurance industry, and offers a solid academic foundation for practitioners to develop their expertise and their careers.

PGD in Maritime Energy

Industry and governments around the world are engaged in the international effort to battle climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, air pollutants, sea-level rise and weather-pattern changes.

LLM/PGD in International Maritime Law

WMU offers two International Maritime Law programmes, an LLM and a Postgraduate Diploma, in partnership with Lloyd’s Maritime Academy.

PGD in Executive Maritime Management

The programme is delivered in association with DNV, the world’s largest ship and offshore classification society.

Non-Degree Courses
English and Study Skills

WMU offers a specialist Maritime English and Study Skills Programme (ESSP). The ESSP is designed to enhance English language competencies and provide the skills necessary to follow a postgraduate programme successfully.

EPEx

An academic offering to professionals in the maritime and ocean sector specifically designed to equip these individuals with specialized knowledge and insight for optimal success in Maritime Affairs.

Maritime Decarbonization

This course focuses on Maritime Decarbonization and offers a forum for education and discussion on reducing GHG emissions from shipping. The philosophy behind this course is that the inevitable maritime energy transition is an opportunity for the industry.

The International Dimension of Maritime Law and Policy

The course introduces the participant to the realm of maritime claims in a wider context, which includes areas such as ship registration, marine insurance, decarbonization, salvage, and compulsory liability.
