The Science Council of Japan established under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister (First General Assembly)
Note: This resulted in changes to the three former academic organizations. The National Research Council of Japan and the Society for the Promotion of Science were abolished. The Japan Academy became an honorary institution attached to the Science Council of Japan.

Control of the Japan Academy transferred to the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, thereby becoming independent from the Science Council of Japan

Transferred back to the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister due to the partial implementation of a new law requiring a revision to the Science Council of Japan Act.

1. Selection of Council Members changed to a system whereby the Science Council of Japan selects Council Members (co-optation) and recommends them to the Prime Minister.
2. Structure was reorganized from seven-sectional to three-sectional structure and a new category of "Members" established.
