The pilot project on establishing Early Warning Systems was completed in Uganda. This project aimed at warning residents of Butaleja District in Eastern Uganda when water levels from the River Manafwa were raising.
The first flood warning system was installed on 22 September 2014, on the Namulo Bridge in Butaleja District. Read more

EBOLA Project

​This project was launched following the call of ITU Member States to use "Information and Communication Technologies to break the chain of health-related emergencies such as Ebola virus transmission" (Resolution 202, PP-2014), with the support of the Japanese Government. The project is part of ITU's efforts to support its Members States in the area of emergency telecommunications.

Development of Satellite Communications Capacity and Emergency Telecommunications Solution for the Pacific Islands

This project aims to develop low cost, reliable, diverse satellite telecommunications capacity for the socio-economic development of the Pacific Islands region utilizing un-used satellite capacity. The telecommunication links will also be used for delivering early warning alerts to communities and to coordinate response activities when disasters strike. The beneficiary countries are: Fiji, Kiribati, Marshal Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

​ITU plays an important role in using ICTs for disaster risk reduction and management, through the design of national emergency telecommunication plans, the setting up of early warning and monitoring systems and the provision of emergency telecommunications equipment when disasters strike.
