Buried Treasures Locations
It wouldn't be a real pirate's life if you didn't spend time searching for buried treasures in Windrose. But before you can even think about searching for where X marks the spot, you'll need a Shovel. This guide will help you along your treasure hunting journey, with information on crafting a Shovel and the locations of Buried Treasure on the map.

How to Get a Shovel
A Shovel will be essential for you to uncover any buried treasure. If you're just starting Windrose, then I'd recommend sticking with the tutorial quest, which will task you with getting Copper Ore and making Copper Ingot.
You can, of course, just craft yourself a Stone Pickaxe using 3x Stone and 3x Wood (collected from Scattered Logs), and go straight to the Copper Cave to begin mining.
Crafting a Shovel requires Copper Ingot, so you'll then need a Charcoal Kiln (20x Clay and 25x Wood) and a Smelting Furnace (15x Clay and 30x Stone) to be able to do so.
As your Copper Ingot production begins, you'll unlock the recipe to make a Shovel. This can be crafted at the Workbench and requires 3x Copper Ingot and 10x Wood.
Now that you have your Shovel, it's time to find some treasure!
Fifteen Men on a Dead Man's Chest Side Quest
On the first island, you'll find a Pirate Remains Point of Interest in the east.
Head over to it, and you'll discover a boat. By the boat is a Decrepit Chest. Inside, you'll find a Blurry Sketch of the Island, which begins a side quest called Fifteen Men on a Dead Man's Chest.
Northwest of the Pirate Remains POI, and before the Ancient Ruins, you'll see a marker for the side quest. Head to the location, and you'll see four Skeletons around a patch of dirt.
How to Use a Shovel
It's important to note that a Shovel can also be equipped as a weapon, and when you hold it, you'll see a menu that says Weapon, Dig, Raise, and Flatten. Scroll between these options using Z or X until Dig is highlighted.
Dig down in the center to reveal the chest. But be warned, that this one is a trap. As soon as you interact with the chest, four Drowned will spawn and attack. You'll need to take them down before you can loot the chest.
Inside, you'll get your rewards for completing the side quest, which are:
- 5x Guinea
- 4x Silver Ingot
Eyes Wide With Fear Side Quest
There's another side quest that will send you off to track down buried treasure. You can do this fairly early in your seafaring adventure, as the recommended level to complete it is Level 3.
In the Coastal Jungle, you'll need to discover the Island that has an Old Cabin, a Shipwreck Site, and an Inhabited Ruin. Visiting any of these and looting the chests will grant you one of the Diary Fragments notes.
| Notes to Find | ||
|---|---|---|
| Location | Note | Collected |
| Shipwreck Site | Diary Fragment - Castaway 1 | |
| Inhabited Ruin | Diary Fragment - Castaway 2 | |
| Old Cabin | Diary Fragment - Castaway 3 | |
These notes belong to someone else who was stranded in the Coastal Jungle, and looting all locations and tracking down the three pages of the Castaway Collection of notes will reveal a marker in the north.
Finding the buried treasure itself can actually be quite tricky, as there doesn't appear to be distinct markers. But to give you some guidance, here's what I encountered as I reached the area.
With the marker in the northwest, and coming at it from a southeast direction, I encountered a group of large stones clustered together.
As I approached the marker, I also saw Azure Dodos standing just beyond the area you need to dig, with Misty Orchids to the north of it. There was a slightly raised area of ground, with lots of scattered logs nearby.
I'd recommend using the mini-map to help you locate it, in case it's different for you. When zoomed in as far as possible, my character was NOT on the map marker. But using the mini-map, I was directly on top of it.
Once you've dug around a bit, you'll find An Old Chest. This one doesn't sparkle when you uncover it. Inside, you'll get your quest rewards, which are 10x Guinea and some Tumbaga Ingot, as well as a note titled List of Essentials. This is the final note in the Castaway collection.
Exquemelin's Treasures - Treasure 1
The Traveler's Camp can be found in the southwest of the first island. The camp is deserted, so you don't need to worry about there being any threats when you arrive. All you'll find is a tent and a campfire that's gone out.
Just outside of the tent, you'll find a chest. Loot this and you'll receive a note titled Twist of Fancy. This is one of seven notes, belonging to the Traveler's Journal Collection.
The note talks of a Smuggler's Cache. But more importantly, Alexandre Exquemelin, the traveler who wrote the note, says that they buried excess gear nearby.
How to Find the Tree with the Red Rag
As mentioned in the note, the gear can be found "beneath the tree marked with a red rag." Thankfully, it's right by the Traveler's Camp.
Face west, away from the camp, and look for a white tree. You'll see the red rag wrapped around it.
Head toward it, equip your shovel, and start digging (on the tree's southwest side). You'll start to see sparkles before you see the chest, but eventually, you'll uncover a Decrepit Chest.
Loot is randomized, so what you get may differ. I got 10x Homemade Gunpowder, 5x Healing Potion, and 5x Great Healing Potion from the chest.
Exquemelin's Treasures - Treasure 2
Note from Lauren - Associate Editor, IGN Guides
From this point on, I won't refer to islands with specific numbers, as you'll discover them at your own pace. Instead, I'll provide a map and note what other points of interest or side quests are connected to the island, to make it easier for you to identify. The next island you need to visit is near the one that features Blackbeard Outpost in Ancient Ruins. You'll visit this as part of the Revenge Is Best Served Cold main quest.
There's a small island just off the larger one, where you can find the next Traveler Camp. Again, you'll find a chest outside the tent. Loot the chest and collect the Relative Cost note.
Head southwest of the camp to find the white tree with the red cloth tied around it.
Dig on the western side of the tree to find the chest. For me, this contained 3x Rum Bottle, 2x Brandy, and 2x Madeira.
Exquemelin's Treasures - Treasure 3
The next treasure can be found on the island with the Fisherman's Hut, Traveler's Camp, Smuggler's Cache, Copper Deposit, and Jungle Cave. Here, you can pick up the Sacrificial Lamb side quest, and you'll visit it as part of the Underground Network side quest.
The Traveler's Camp is where you want to head to, just like before. Loot the chest outside of the tent, and this time you'll get the note A Hat Worth Boarding For.
In this note, Exquemelin says they'll bury the chest underneath a tree marked with a red strip of cloth, so it's time to track another one down.
Go north from the camp to find said tree, and dig on the northwest side of it to find the treasure. The loot I received was 5x Elixir of Cruelty and a Gold Temple Jug.
Blackbeard Crew Maps
Once you leave the first island, you'll start to encounter Blackbeard Pirate Camps. In these, you can loot chests and discover treasure maps for Blackbeard's Crew.
Loot is random in each location, but notable loot seems to appear in the same place. With that in mind, here are the locations I looted for each of the maps, but please keep in mind these may differ for you:
Blackbeard Crew's First Map
Looted from a chest in the Blackbeard Pirate Camp in the northwest of Island 3. You'll go here as part of the Rescuing the Crew main mission.
Blackbeard Crew's Second Map
I found the Blackbeard Crew's Second Map in the Blackbeard Outpost in the Ancient Ruins. You'll need to go here to collect Black Marks as part of the Revenge Is Best Served Cold quest.
To access these chests, you'll need to kill Lieutenants and Musketeers, who will drop keys to the chests.
Blackbeard Crew's Third Map
Blackbeard Crew's Third Map appeared for me in the Blackbeard Camp Near Shipwreck. This is another location you'll visit as part of the Revenge is Best Served Cold quest. I found this is one of the chests inside the tents.
Blackbeard Crew's Fourth Map
This one will only be accessible after you've taken down the Local Threat of the Coastal Jungle region, which is Tap to Reveal
You'll have to visit an island as part of the Revenge Is Best Served Cold main quest and Bitter Pill side quest. This will lead you to Blackbeard Pirate Camp, with a skull and hat as an icon.
Once you've cleared the camp, you'll be free to loot the treasure chests inside. One of these contains Blackbeard Crew's Fourth Map.
Blackbeard Crew's Sixth Map
Once you've cleared the Local Threat from the Coastal Jungle, you'll be sent to the Foothills region of the world as part of the Needle in a Haystack quest.
On the same island that you need to explore three Small Pirate Camps, you can also find a Ransacked Blackbeard Pirate Camp guarded by an Alpha Wolf. Loot the chest to find the sixth map.
X Marks the Spot
These locations will be marked on your world map, like so:
The key thing to know about these is that when you visit the location, you'll often find a grave, or a mound of dirt with a skeleton nearby.
The skeleton is always the marker that tells you that you're in the right place and indicates where you should dig. Inside these chests, you'll typically find Piastre, Silver Ingots, and Blackbeard Style Books for your ship.
