Act 1 Chapter 2
Left Behind
Story Mission
This is the first mission where you’ll get a taste for what it’s like to run a full four-person squad. After the cutscene, your squad will get two extra recruits: Tyrone the Heavy, who wields a chaingun that limits his mobility and the variety of actions he can take, but makes up for it with sheer firepower. Then there’s Marcella, a Scout-class troop. She’s using a shotgun that has considerable firepower, but very limited range. She also has a cloaking ability that can let her get through an enemy’s overwatch cone without a hassle.
The mission starts with your full squad out in the middle of a large courtyard with a COG tank broken down closer to the center-left. This map is definitely trying to encourage you to use its wider size to capitalize on your larger squad, so don’t be afraid to spread out to the flanks. Although word to the wise, I’d keep Marcella closer to the center of the action unless you really want to utilize her scouting to seriously outflank the Locust.
You’re late to the party, so a group of Locust have already set up shop near the disabled tank. This is a pretty straightforward fight, but one thing to look out for is the wooden boxes that litter this central area. You can use them as cover, but they’ll crumble as soon as an enemy fires at you, so try to rely on more sturdy cover.
In my own run through this mission, I found that this early group of Locust just centralize on that tank, so you shouldn’t have to worry too much about your left side getting flanked. Take the center lane with Sid and perhaps Tyrone to lay down heavier fire while Gabe and Marcella take the flanks up on the right.
After you clear out the first group of Locust, an E-hole will emerge a few yards beyond the small blue guard tower that’s kind of easy to miss. It’s critical that you don’t overextend your squad here, as a group of Wretches will spawn further to the right side.
Your best bet is to have someone like Tyrone or Sid post up in the small guard tower that stands in the center of the bunkered area you just took.
Also, don’t forget that Gabe has a healing stim ability AND a healing grenade that works on groups of allies (or just one). You’ll likely need it, especially if you want to keep one of your squadmates from being downed and needing a revive, which negates one of the mission challenges.
Remember that your overwatch ability lets you shoot once for every action point you have remaining, so if a group of Wretches is barreling down on you, don’t feel like you have to overextend a character.
Throw a grenade in the E-hole once things calm down a little, take out any remaining Locust, and prepare for the final wave of enemies.
This final wave will spawn pretty much exactly where you started this mission, a few yards beyond the disabled tank. You’ll see a group of Locust soldiers swarming what is now your right flank and (probably) trying to push up the center, while a group of Wretches likely come down the left lane.
In my experience, your best bet is to keep whoever you had posted in the guard tower there, as that height advantage will be critical. Keep one soldier down to the now right side of the tower, behind cover of course, one to the left, and one on the far left to provide overwatch on the Wretches. The Wretches might try to cross over to the center of the battlefield, but at that point you should have enough room to individually shoot them down. Better yet, remember that each character should have a grenade (except for Gabe’s healing grenade), which will make quick work of Wretches, or even the group of Locust who seem to be fond of turtling up in cover just beyond the tank.
After you’ve cleared out that final group, the mission end. Congrats, you just survived your first full-squad fight in Gears Tactics.
Other Tips
I noticed that the truck/garden area on the right side of the map doesn’t allow for very good overwatch, blocking your view. Try to avoid it.
Case locations:
- On the right side of the courtyard after you start the mission. Not a bad idea to have Marcella grab it since she’ll likely be flanking that way anyway.
- To the left of the squad’s starting position. You could probably use Tyrone to grab it since he’ll likely be covering that side anyway.
