The Ash and Iron major update for Destiny 2 launched on September 9, 2025, bringing players back to the Plaguelands in a free content update following the release of The Edge of Fate expansion. The Ash and Iron update for Destiny 2 launched with the weekly reset on September 9, 2025 at 10 AM PDT / 1 PM EDT / 6 PM BST.

Destiny 2 Ash and Iron Update Details

Ash and Iron is the first of many planned free content updates for Destiny 2 following the conclusion of the Light and Darkness saga. It's essentially a mid-season update that bridges the gap between The Edge of Fate and Renegades.

Unlike a paid expansion, Ash and Iron's features are available to all Destiny 2 players free of charge.

Ash and Iron Story Content

Since it's a free update and not a new expansion or season launch, Ash and Iron doesn't feature any new campaign missions. The only new story content is an introductory mission called Initialize that sets up the Reclaim activity.

From there, it's just Reclaim grinding until Renegades launches in December. New voice lines and radio chatter has been added for Reclaim, however, and there are a few new data pads to find in Fireteam Ops and other missions with brief lore tidbits as well.

Reclaim Activity

Reclaimis the highlight of the Ash and Iron update. It's a four-stage activity that sends teams of three to the Cosmodrome and the Plaguelands (returning for the first time since Rise of Iron) to recover Golden Age tech before it falls into the wrong hands.

It's a combat-heavy activity that's perfect for testing out new builds. It's also the main source of the new weapons introduced in Ash and Iron. A crossbow is finally available outside of the Desert Perpetual raid, and fan-favorite weapons like the MIDA Mini-Tool have been reprised and fit in with the new gear tier system introduced in The Edge of Fate.
