The NPC Gilbert is one of the first you can meet. He hides behind a window right beside the Central Yarnham lamp. You can speak to him several times, however if you speak to him after killing Father Gascoigne, he will give you a Flamesprayer.
If you return to him after killing Rom the Vacuous Spider, Gilbert will have turned into a small beast. Kill him to obtain a Clawmark Rune.
