Sustainable Development Goals

What are the SDGs?

In 2015, the international community agreed on a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to guide development planning for the next 15 years. The SDGs consist of 17 interrelated goals that are intended to end poverty and inequality, protect the planet, and leave no one behind. IGES is committed to supporting a diverse range of stakeholders to achieve the SDGs.

Progress on the SDGs

At their midway point, the world is unfortunately not on pace to achieve the SDGs. Even more worrying is that countries in Asia tend to be moving more slowly than countries in other regions. However, there are some encourgaing signs both in and outside Asia that countries are moving forward on the SDGs. These encouraging signs include a greater focus on synergies in national SDG plans as well as local governments advancing innovative solutions to the SDGs.

How to Achieve SDGs/2030 agenda and IGES's approach

IGES has focused on three approaches to help countries and other stakeholders achieve the SDGs.

An integrated approach concentrates on strengthening cross-sectoral coordination to achieve synergies between the SDGs; an inclusive approach focuses on enabling participation of diverse stakeholders to ensure different voices are heard and 'no one is left behind'; a localised approach concentrates on aligning global goals with local needs to drive change on the ground.

As a 'change agent', IGES organises and participates in networks, partnerships and conferences that offer opportunities for governments, businesses, investors, researchers, citizens and non-profit groups to enhance integration, inclusion, and localisation and promote a transformation towards a sustainable society.
