IT’S magical. It’s beautiful. It’s fabled, yet it’s real. And it says more about Australia than any other thing.

It is, of course, the Melbourne Cup, and it’s on on Tuesday November 7.

It’s three-and-a-bit minutes of heart-stopping, soul-stirring history we get to celebrate each year, and as we all know, everyone stops to pay attention.

And in all the world, it is unique.

Explained to Britons, they say "Oh, it’s just like the Grand National then?" Told to Americans, they say "It’s like our Kentucky Derby".

But it’s so much more than those two, and so much more than just a horse race. While many in those countries will watch their one race a year, they both fall a long way short of Australians’ fixation on the Cup.

Where: Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne, Victoria

When: Tuesday November 5, 3:00pm

Distance: 3200m

Field: The Melbourne Cup field is made up of 24 horses with no emergencies. Each year hundreds of horses will nominate for the race and based on the balloting system and handicapping, it is reduced to 24 after the running of the Lexus Stakes on Derby Day.

Prize: The Cup winner earns 4ドル.4 million. The trainer gets 10 per cent of that, the jockey five per cent and the owner 85%. You get over a million bucks just for coming second, at 1ドル.1. And even the 12th horse earns 160,000,ドル as do sixth to eleventh.
