Western Bulldogs
2020 PREVIEW
If AFLW can prove one thing, it’s that nothing is certain in this league. The Bulldogs went from top of the mountain in 2018 to total blow-up in 2019 and their off-season was shambolic to say the least.
There were fractures within the playing group, the coach departed, the captain wanted out, their gun midfielder asked for a trade – what could go wrong went wrong, but a new year is a new opportunity for the Bulldogs.
The addition of former AFL player Nathan Burke has added a no-nonsense approach, and while they were decimated by free agency and trades, the Bulldogs made the most of their four top-10 picks on draft night, taking gun midfielder Gabby Newton as the No. 1 overall pick, gun forward Nell Morris-Dalton at No.6, ball carrier Gemma Lagioia at pick 8, and winger Elisabeth Georgostathis at pick 9 to form a young unit that will be revered well into the future.
Izzy Huntington shapes as a new recruit given her positional change from forward to defence, which will undoubtedly be the club’s Achilles heel in 2020 – their defence leaves a lot to be desired. This season looms as a step in the right direction with the club looking to the long term, rather than a quick fix.
