From the name of a mountain near Barcelona, derived from Latin mons serratus meaning "jagged mountain". It is the site of a medieval monastery that houses a famous statue of the Virgin Mary, called Mare de Déu de Montserrat in Catalan, meaning "Mother of God of Montserrat". She is a patron saint of Catalonia.
