Governance Operations
APA policies are established by the Council of Representatives, but boards and committees play an important role in developing and proposing policies for the council's consideration and approval. Indeed, APA looks to board and committee members to provide insights and expertise on myriad issues and initiatives.
In Practice you'll find a host of boards, committees and working groups devoted to addressing professional affairs issues and advancing the strategic goals of the association. Among them are the Board of Professional Affairs (BPA) and Committee on Professional Practice and Standards (COPPS). Also housed in Practice: The Committee on Rural Health (CRH), the Task Force on Serious Mental Illness/Severe Emotional Disturbance (TFSMI/SED) and the Advisory Committee on Colleague Assistance (ACCA).
Of course, member involvement can take many shapes and forms. For example, members are invited to share their views and comments on issues like licensure, scope of practice and other substantive areas during formal calls for comments. Members are also encouraged to nominate themselves and/or their colleagues for various APA boards, committees, task forces and other groups. We also call upon members to provide insights on public policy and other matters, or to spread the word about strategic initiatives here at APA.
