APA History and Archives

APA was founded in July 1892, at Clark University. Its first president was G. Stanley Hall and it began with 31 members. After World War II, it expanded and grew quickly. Today, APA is the leading scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States, with 54 divisions and more than 172,000 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants, and students as its members.

Carl Rogers Carl R. Rogers (1902–1987) is esteemed as one of the founders of humanistic psychology. He developed the person-centered, also known as client-centered, approach to psychotherapy and developed the concept of unconditional positive regard while pioneering the field of clinical psychological research.
