Richard A. Bierschbach was elected the 14th president of Wayne State University by the Board of Governors on Feb. 24, 2026.

The University Leadership Council, chaired by the provost, was created to promote deeper connections and articulation between the work of executive and academic leaders and include and consider important shared governance perspectives.

Wayne State University is governed by an eight-member Board of Governors elected by Michigan voters. The board's key responsibilities include choosing the university presidents, supervising the control and direction of university funds, setting tuition and other fiscal policies, determining compensation for services, and conferring degrees.
