Welcome to the heart of Detroit
For more than 150 years, Wayne State has called Detroit home. Located in Midtown, one of the country's fastest-growing neighborhoods, our campus is part of a vibrant cultural center, just steps from world-famous galleries, theatres, restaurants and businesses. There's a reason why more than 2.5 million visitors come to Midtown each year, and why Detroit was named one of the world's top 50 travel destinations.
A city like no other
Home to residents from around the globe, Detroit offers unlimited opportunities to broaden your horizons and experience new perspectives. Located on one of the world’s most booming international borders, it’s also a gateway to unique international experiences.
Detroit is home to the Motown sound and where Jack White, Eminem and Aretha Franklin, among others, got their start. That legacy continues, with a vibrant music scene that includes the annual Detroit Jazz Festival, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and live music venues throughout the city.
The Motor City put the world on wheels — but it didn’t stop there. Detroit is the headquarters for several major health care systems, law offices and global corporations. A center for innovation, it’s also home to startups and tech companies that are revolutionizing how we live.
Detroit's cultural gateway
Discover a world of exploration at Wayne State. Our campus museums are your gateway to geology, anthropology and space science, reflecting Detroit’s creative energy in every collection. Located in the heart of the cultural district, we're just steps from the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Historical Museum.
Entertainment
There’s nothing like a night out in Detroit. From cheering on the Lions, Tigers and Pistons to singing along with thousands at a concert or taking in a play, Detroit offers a variety of entertainment venues and opportunities all year long.
Transportation
Detroit made the automobile famous, but there are countless ways to explore the Motor City. Take the QLine streetcar down Woodward, use the People Mover downtown, or get some fresh air with bike and scooter rentals. Best of all, Wayne State students and employees enjoy free transportation options throughout campus, thanks to partnerships with DDOT, SMART, the QLine and MoGo.
Outdoor/Attractions
Looking to see what makes Detroit unique? Just step outside, and you’ll find plenty to explore. From picnicking at Belle Isle to lounging on the "beach" in Campus Martius or strolling down the Detroit Riverwalk — named the best riverwalk in the nation by USA Today — there’s no shortage of opportunities to get some fresh air and enjoy all Detroit has to offer.
