Jones Vector

A vector useful for treating polarized waves defined by

(1)

and usually normalized to unity. Polarization states are orthogonal when

(2)

where denotes the complex conjugate Eric Weisstein's World of Math of z.

The following table summarizes the Jones vectors for common optical components.

Polarization Jones Vector
linear horizontal
linear vertical
linear
linear -45°
circular, right-handed
circular, left-handed

Any combination of polarizers and wave plates may then be applied using Jones matrices.
