Drag Coefficient

The drag coefficient is defined by


where is the drag force, is the density, U is the speed, and L is the size scale of the body (Tritton 1988, p. 93). The drag coefficients for various bodies are summarized in the following table.

0.2 for turbulent flow with
0.3 golf balls, professionally hit tennis balls, baseballs with v > 120 mph (54 m s-1)
0.47 for non-turbulent boundary layer flow with
0.5 ping-pong balls, baseballs with v < 60 mph (27 m s-1)
