Spin-Down Time

The torque on a fluid spinning in an enclosed tank of radius R at angular velocity is given by

(1)

where

(2)

is the drag force in the boundary layer, the density, the kinematic viscosity, v is the velocity in the boundary layer, L the length scale, and is the thickness of the boundary layer. Plugging in and

(3)

gives

(4)

But

(5)

so (4) becomes

(6)

Boundary Layer, Drag Force
