Wikimania-Banner/Old
I recuse myself from commenting on this banner. :p -- Grunt 15:15, 2004 Nov 5 (UTC)
- No eye catcher, hard to read because of no space between lines, centered text and capitalization. --Bananeweizen 07:45, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Just like my old banner with Gill Sans substituted for Bitstream Charter as the font. I must admit that I like the all caps Gill Sans text and prefer it to the text on the old banner. -- Grunt 00:05, 2004 Nov 6 (UTC)
- I am starting to recieve translations for the text on my banners. I will put them up on Commons in this type of style after I finish creating EPS files for the translated banners. -- Grunt 18:03, 2004 Nov 9 (UTC)
- Sorry, but I don ́t like fulltext capitals and double logo left and right, one is enough. --Bdk 12:57, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Variant of Banner 2
[edit ]This shows my banner using the lowercase font, which I don't seem to mind now. -- Grunt 01:13, 2004 Nov 14 (UTC)
I personally don't like this banner. It strikes me as being too big-buisnessy (the font, at least). Plus I don't know whether or not this could be scaled up to a larger size and still maintain a crisp look (in case we decide to print full size banners). Aside from that it's, well, very similar to mine. :) -- Grunt 15:15, 2004 Nov 5 (UTC)
- Sorry Grunt, but don't bash me for the used font (Gill Sans), it's the font of Wikimedia - please have a look at the logo ;-) The font was the main reason to create the alternative draft. Of course we have to find a solution for the widely-used 468x60 format as for as many formats as possible. Please see my German Wikipedia banners for some examples. -- Arne (akl) 15:37, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- It's not the font itself I don't like. It's the application of the font to all of the text on the banner. I think that I could tolerate it if it was either restricted to "Wikimania 2005" or written entirely in capital letters (as it always is on the Wikimedia logos!). I'd urge you to try both of those and see how they turn out. For that matter, I should try the same with my own banner and see how it looks. :) -- Grunt 16:04, 2004 Nov 5 (UTC)
- I prefer the sans-serif one, the serif one is harder to read at that resolution. The lines are too thin to catch attention. -- JeLuF 16:17, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- We're not necessarily discussing just this size for the banner. We should be thinking about what the banner would look like if it were scaled up to a size where we could hang it up in the conference hall should we decide to do that. I will see what I can do about putting akl's banners into an easily scalable file format so that we can see how they look at such a size. -- Grunt 18:12, 2004 Nov 5 (UTC)
- I can send you a PDF, if you want. But if we print a large banner to hang it up in the conference hall, wouldn't it be better to avoid any text except "Wikimania" (and perhaps "International Wikimedia Conference"), so we could use it again in 2006? -- Arne (akl) 18:25, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- See Image:Wikimania_banner_in_conference_hall-simulation.jpg for a simulation of the banner in the conference hall. -- Arne (akl) 18:48, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

International full-size banner format.
- My percieved overcorporatist issue stands. I still think this banner would look nicer if the text were in entirely capital letters. I also think that Frankfurt am Main would be preferable to Frankfurt on at least the translated banners (especially de:!) and would like to know if it's possible to squeeze that in to the little date/name box you have there. -- Grunt 18:00, 2004 Nov 5 (UTC)
- More than one or two words in capital letters are very hard to read, but perhaps I will try it later. In the German version Frankfurt, Germany should be replaced by Frankfurt am Main. And of course it's a first draft. -- Arne (akl) 18:21, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Not just in Germany, in the Netherlands (and probably in other surrrounding countries as well) it is commonly known that there are more than one Frankfurts in Germany, so there also the city should be specified. Fruggo 20:15, 22 Nov 2004 (UTC)

- I like this one most. It is easy to read, one can get the information at the first glance. --Anathema 12:00, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- akl ́s Version 2a is my favourite one. Its clear and well designed. --Bdk 12:57, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Different font examples for the subline
[edit ]- A: Gill Sans (Wikimedia logo font)
- B: Gill Sans, capital letters
- C: Gill Sans, small caps
- D: Stempel Garamond (Wikipedia logo font), small caps
- E: Stempel Garamond, italic (like in the subline of the Wikipedia logo)
I don't like the sublines in capital letters/small caps (B-D) because they are very hard to read (However, long spans of text in all uppercase are harder to read because of the absence of ascenders and descenders found in lowercase letters, which better aid recognition, see en:Majuscule), especially if we want to have smaller banner versions. If you don't like a single-font banner (all text in Gill Sans) I could live with version E as a compromise -- Arne (akl) 12:43, 6 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- I like all of these, especially B and D; as fond as I am of lowercasing text for readability, this is a banner, not a novel. I would definitely replace "Frankfurt, Germany" with "Frankfurt am Main," however. Austin Hair 00:50, Nov 26, 2004 (UTC)
- I like those and the one below best, but would suggest a mix. Keep the logo on the full height of the banner, and WIKIMANIA and The first International Conference the same width. I believe the readability of these banners (with more space for the location tag) is better than the ones below. notafish }<';> 01:32, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
modified version of banner 2
- I like. The date tag doesn't look as dodgy on screen as on banner 2 and is clear, concise :) -- BesigedB
- This one is very good too. I don't know what "dodgy" means, but surely BesigedB is right. ;-) --Anathema 12:02, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- The tag on Banner 2 isn't antialiased that well. Dodgy is slang for not-right. --BesigedB 18:54, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Hm, I don ́t like the bleed off logo. --Bdk 12:57, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- This is the best concept so far, but I'd like a full logo. ✏ Sverdrup 00:40, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Real Great, I would take this!!!
- +1 :-) Iron Bishop 17:52, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Same banner without logo bleed
[edit ]File:Wikimania-468x60-en-3a.png
- This is my favorite. -- Arne (akl) 09:16, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Best of the lot, 2005 is not required, logo visible, good design. -- Solitude 10:19, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- The question has been raised as to what we would do if some of our sponsors requested that their logo be placed on these banners. The current design of this banner doesn't really allow this, but we don't know if this'll be an issue or not yet. -- Grunt 22:04, 2004 Nov 15 (UTC)
- I strongly disbelieve we would accept a sponsor logo on the banner. As much as I disbelieve this will be an issue I'm sure we would find a way to handle it without changing the overall impression of the banner. But the way depends on the logo, so better let's talk about if it really happens. -- Arne (akl) 09:11, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- My clear favorite until now, eye catcher and good readability. --Bananeweizen 07:46, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- This is probably the best, IMO, but I repeat the comment re the venue. Austin Hair 01:01, Nov 26, 2004 (UTC)
- Good one. Logo should not bleed. I am concerned about how *we* will fit "Allemagne" where it says Germany, though ;-), see my comments of A B C D banners above (shrink First International... to same width as WIKIMANIA 2005). Colors of the WMF logo seem pale don't they ? notafish }<';> 01:26, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- Yeah, this is what I want. (see above) ✏ Sverdrup 01:32, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- I like it! --Aphaia 03:09, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
how about including one of the most famous and characteristic faces of Frankfurt, for instance like this:
it should of course also read "Frankfurt, date etc".
- Sorry, I don ́t like any portrait (or a single person) for our banner. --Bdk 12:57, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Sorry, but one of the most important rules is: faces should never look "out of the page". Nevertheless I like the banner most as it is the only one that h a s a face (oh, what a game of words) 25 Nov 2004
General Comments
[edit ]perhaps "Germany" should be removed. Then the banner would be largely language neutral. Frankfurt am Main is itself well-known enough.
- "The First International Wikimedia Conference" is far from "language neutral". I think more people will understand "Germany". -- JeLuF 17:02, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- We will need to translate the banner anyway. Language neutrality is hardly an issue, IMO. -- Grunt 18:07, 2004 Nov 5 (UTC)
Not a banner as such, but just a quick&dirty mockup:
This one is very nice. However letters should be in a more visible color. Arno Lagrange ✉ 14:14, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)
It looks nice but i agree with Arno; the letters arent very visable in the second version. Also the date and location are a bit small. Diploid 22:56 (EST), 7 Feb 2005
