Wiki Health Uganda.
Wiki Health Uganda is a community-driven health-content initiative based in Uganda, operating under the umbrella of the Wiki Project Med Foundation (WPMEDF) the Wikimedia movement 's thematic organization for health care content, also known as Wikimedia Medicine.
Our aim is to improve the quality, reach, and reliability of health information available to Ugandans across Wikimedia projects in English and in Ugandan languages such as Luganda, Runyankole-Rukiga, Acholi, Ateso, etc, both online and offline.
The Wiki Project Med Foundation, which anchors this work, is an independent corporation founded in December 2012, committed "to make clear, reliable, comprehensive, up-to-date educational resources and information in the biomedical and related social sciences freely available to all people in the language of their choice online and off." It is incorporated in New York State, tax-exempt in the United States, and has been recognised by the Wikimedia Foundation as a thematic organisation with the right to use the "Wikimedia Medicine" name since Summer 2019.
Locally, Wiki Health Uganda advances this mission by collaborating with Ugandan universities, health institutions, and Wikimedia volunteers; running editathons and editor trainings; translating and improving priority health articles; and expanding access to medical literature and offline health resources for communities with limited connectivity.
Mission
[edit ]To improve access to clear, reliable, comprehensive, and up-to-date health information for people in Uganda in English and in Ugandan languages of their choice on and offline, in support of the wider Wiki Project Med mission across the biomedical and related social sciences.
Focus areas
[edit ]Some of our activities and focus areas include:
- Improving and expanding health articles on the English and Luganda Wikipedias, and other local language wikipedias that will come on board in the near future, with attention to conditions of local public-health importance (e.g. malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, maternal and child health, and non-communicable diseases)
- Translating priority health content into Ugandan languages via the Translation Task Force
- Editathons, trainings, and campaigns for new and existing Ugandan editors
- Partnerships with Ugandan universities, medical schools, and health institutions
- Offline access to health information through Internet-in-a-Box in schools and clinics
- Building health-topic video content via VideoWiki
- Contributing to and drawing on MDWiki.org and Offline Apps
Join
[edit ]Membership in Wiki Project Med is free for active contributors of medical content to a Wikimedia project (such as MDWiki or Wikipedia) or for participants in an organization whose mission aligns with Wiki Project Med's. As of 2023, members must have an MDWiki account. Full requirements are listed here.
