Wiki Climate Campus Tour Nigeria

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

The representation of Nigeria's context on climate change-related topics on Wikipedia and Wikidata is also limited with very little information available. In an op-ed by the Nigerian President, it was revealed that 34 out of 36 states in Nigeria are facing severe flooding that has displaced 1.4 million people. Yet, only a few selected states have gained visibility on Wikipedia. Furthermore, Wikipedia articles on climate action, climate finance, Climate Act, and biodiversity loss do not adequately reflect the Nigerian context. An analysis of Climate change in Nigeria, using Wiki Nav, found that there is low readability on these topics, with only 0.11% of views on biodiversity loss, 2.95% on the 2022 Nigerian floods, and 0.79% on the geography of Nigeria. An off-wiki analysis of the floods returned only surface-level information on the impact and response to the floods in the affected states. In contrast, a Google search returned numerous news reports, video documentaries, and articles on the topic. Furthermore, a UN report and a report by Eromosele in 2022 indicated that Nigeria, with a population of about 200 million people, has a youth population accounting for over half of the total population. However, a report by Okojie in 2019 found that many Nigerian youths lack an understanding of climate science and global warming, despite the negative impact of climate change on the ecosystem. This project aims to incorporate climate change literacy into Nigeria's educational system to increase understanding of these issues among young people and stimulate innovations to address climate risks. This will lead to a higher rate of youth involvement in climate change advocacy, bridge the existing content gap on Wikipedia and Wikidata, and increase the number of well-informed students actively engaged in climate action and stakeholder engagement in their communities. The Nigerian youth population, which is the world's largest with a median age of 18.1 years and approximately 70% of the population under 30 and 42% under the age of 15, is a valuable investment for the future and will be a key focus of this project.
