In brief
[edit ]WikiFundi is a software that provides off-line editing environment that mimics the Wikipedia environment. WikiFundi allows for training and contribution when technology, access and electricity outages fail or are not available at all. It enables individuals, groups and communities to learn how to edit Wikipedia, and to work on articles collaboratively. It requires a local server (such as a raspberry PI) which will provide a local wifi network to which editors may contact. Once completed and connected to the internet, the articles produced can be uploaded to Wikipedia.
The WikiFundi software and its documentation is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.

History
[edit ]The project has been conceptualised and conceived by Florence Devouard and Isla Haddow-Flood from Wiki in Africa association in 2016. A WikiAfrica project, it included:
- the coding of a software, WikiFundi, that provides off-line editing environment that mimics the Wikipedia environment.
- the creation of action packs for use by local Wikimedia chapters, user groups or isolated individuals in Africa (featuring the wikifundi software, raspberry PIs, and OER resources. It was meant to facilitate the outreach work of Wikimedia chapters, User Group and individuals, and encourage the growth of digital skills and content contribution by teachers and students across Africa;
- a writing contest that run in African Schools since 2017, WikiChallenge Ecoles d'Afrique.
The first release of the software took place in January 2017. The software was created by Florence Devouard (Anthere), Emmanuel Engelhard (Kelson), Florent Kaisser, Renaud Gaudin and other members of the community. It has been realized in collaboration with Wikimedia CH and Kiwix. The development of this software was made possible thanks to the Orange Foundation.
A second release occured in Fall 2018. It featured bugs fixing, improvement of user experience, and better software-size optimisation. This second version was lead by Florence Devouard from the Wiki In Africa Association and was financially supported by a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation. The software was improved by Florence Devouard (Anthere), Emmanuel Engelhard (Kelson), Florent Kaisser, Renaud Gaudin and other members of the community.
A third release should occur in 2021. Initial versions were only accessible in French and English. 2021 release will expand to Spanish.
