Hi Stephan,

I could not choose an apropiable licence at time to upload the files. --Jduranboger (talk) 21:54, 21 May 2013 (UTC) Reply

Who has taken the images? Did you take them yourself? If so, could you choose a licence now instead? --Stefan2 (talk) 22:51, 21 May 2013 (UTC) Reply

Hi Stefan2, whether you write Twitter for a link, or have the symbol, it is trademarked to Twitter. They have set up this page which indicates how to use logos and provides downloads. As long as the images are used properly, ie-links to Twitter, it is fine (which they are in this case). They're are "trademarked" templates and other special use templates on Commons but they don't exist here. How would you suggest I indicate these things? I was going to add some information and remove the deletion warning, but I wanted to chat with you first. heather walls (talk) 00:36, 29 May 2013 (UTC) Reply

The trademark is a non-copyright restriction and thus a non-issue for Meta. The problem is that the logo is copyrighted and unlicensed. As Meta-Wiki doesn't have an EDP, only freely licensed files can be uploaded to Meta. --Stefan2 (talk) 09:56, 29 May 2013 (UTC) Reply
What indicates that the bird is copyrighted? (I am seriously curious) the site I linked to does not, and it's a pretty basic bird-shape that wouldn't inherently mean copyright, would it? Not having an EDP does not equal "only freely licensed files can be uploaded to Meta." in fact that discussion is happening right now which of course you know because you are in it. Would you consider removing the deletion until consensus is found? heather walls (talk) 19:17, 30 May 2013 (UTC) Reply
There is no evidence that the logo isn't copyrighted and it is a recent logo with complex artwork. The discussion at WM:RFD is only about files in a specific category, and the conclusion at Meta:Requests for deletion/Archives/2012#All fair use files and templates was that such files can't be kept as there is no policy allowing them. No EDP does indeed equal "only freely licensed files can be uploaded to Meta". Also, Template:Unfree logo automatically includes a speedy deletion template. --Stefan2 (talk) 06:53, 31 May 2013 (UTC) Reply

I find these tags disturbing as it cuts the grain against how Wikimania bids and other planning work for Wikimedia events have operated for many years. I would request that you stop tagging or deleting files before a consensus was established at both Meta:Babel concerning local uploads for Wikimedia working documents, and Meta:Requests for deletion concerning Wikimania bid files. Der yck C. 15:29, 29 May 2013 (UTC) Reply

At Meta:Requests for deletion/Archives/2012#All fair use files and templates, it was concluded that files can't be hosted here if they aren't freely licensed. --Stefan2 (talk) 15:45, 29 May 2013 (UTC) Reply
I can only say I'm disappointed that neither the Wikimania community nor the WM chapters community have been notified about these discussions. I've posted a message on mail:wikimania-l [1] to invite contribution to the discussions. Der yck C. 15:58, 29 May 2013 (UTC) Reply

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions

[edit ]
Latest comment: 10 years ago 4 comments2 people in discussion

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:21, 20 August 2014 (UTC) Reply

User:Peteforsyth: I am well aware of what has happened to de:MediaWiki:Common.js. Thanks for telling me about this petition. Did you notify everyone in de:Spezial:Linkliste/Benutzer:BeverlyHillsCop/Vorlage:Superprotect? --Stefan2 (talk) 23:57, 20 August 2014 (UTC) Reply
Thank you for asking. No, I have not notified anybody from German Wikipedia (except for those who participated in RFCs or discussions on enwp, Commons, Meta, MediaWikiWiki). If you have suggestions for how to approach that, I would be very interested to hear; I do not speak German, and have very little direct experience with the German Wikipedia community. -Pete F (talk) 00:01, 21 August 2014 (UTC) Reply
I do not speek German either, but since German Wikipedia is heavily affected, there are probably lots of people on that project who might wish to sign the petition.
Some places to look at:
You should probably try to find a German user who can send messages in German to involved people on that project. --Stefan2 (talk) 00:14, 21 August 2014 (UTC) Reply

Superprotect letter update

[edit ]
Latest comment: 10 years ago 1 comment1 person in discussion

Hi Stefan2,

Along with more hundreds of others, you recently signed Letter to Wikimedia Foundation: Superprotect and Media Viewer , which I wrote.

Today, we have 562 signatures here on Meta, and another 61 on change.org, for a total of 623 signatures. Volunteers have fully translated it into 16 languages, and begun other translations. This far exceeds my most optimistic hopes about how many might sign the letter -- I would have been pleased to gain 200 siguatures -- but new signatures continue to come.

I believe this is a significant moment for Wikimedia and Wikipedia. Very rarely have I seen large numbers of people from multiple language and project communities speak with a unified voice. As I understand it, we are unified in a desire for the Wikimedia Foundation to respect -- in actions, in addition to words -- the will of the community who has built the Wikimedia projects for the benefit of all humanity. I strongly believe it is possible to innovate and improve our software tools, together with the Wikimedia Foundation. But substantial changes are necessary in order for us to work together smoothly and productively. I believe this letter identifies important actions that will strongly support those changes.

Have you been discussing these issues in your local community? If so, I think we would all appreciate an update (on the letter's talk page) about how those discussions have gone, and what people are saying. If not, please be bold and start a discussoin on your Village Pump, or in any other venue your project uses -- and then leave a summary of what kind of response you get on the letter's talk page.

Finally, what do you think is the right time, and the right way, to deliver this letter? We could set a date, or establish a threshold of signatures. I have some ideas, but am open to suggestions.

Thank you for your engagement on this issue, and please stay in touch. -Pete F (talk) 18:13, 26 August 2014 (UTC) Reply

Hi. I tried to copy some files to Commons with CommonsHelper but I get an error. I added links to Template:CC-by-sa-3.0 to make it easy to copy but it does not work. Have you copied files from meta to Commons recently? --MGA73 (talk) 17:11, 5 November 2014 (UTC) Reply

Consider re-licensing File:Newlogo5.png?

[edit ]
Latest comment: 1 month ago 3 comments2 people in discussion

This file was marked {{Proposed logo}} by you, however, Meta-Wiki doesn't allow fair use so that's an invalid license and may result your files, not only this one, be nominated for deletion, but you can just simply avoid that happened by free re-licensing it e.g. as CC BY(-SA). Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 01:35, 7 January 2025 (UTC) Reply

  • User:Liuxinyu970226, it says that the file was uploaded in 2002 by imported>(Automated conversion). It seems that the name of the uploader has been lost at some point, but I was not the one who uploaded the file.
Looking at the history of the file, it seems that I discovered in 2013 that there was no associated file information page for this file, so I created a file information page with tags saying that the source and licence were unknown. Looking at my contributions from that time, I see that I didn't notify any uploader, so presumably I wasn't able to identify the uploader. For the record, File:Yy wiki g01.png and File:Newlogo1.png were also tagged as missing source and licence at the same time. Later, other people added copyright tags to the three files. --Stefan2 (talk) 12:21, 7 January 2025 (UTC) Reply

Updates for editors

  • Editors who use the "Special characters" editing-toolbar menu can now see the 32 special characters you have used most recently, across editing sessions on that wiki. This change should help make it easier to find the characters you use most often. The feature is in both the 2010 wikitext editor and VisualEditor. [4]
  • Editors using the 2010 wikitext editor can now create sublists with correct indentation by selecting the line(s) you want to indent and then clicking the toolbar buttons.[5] You can now also insert <code> tags using a new toolbar button.[6] Thanks to user stjn for these improvements.
  • Help is needed to ensure the citation generator works properly on each wiki.
    • (1) Administrators should update the local versions of the page MediaWiki:Citoid-template-type-map.json to include entries for preprint, standard, and dataset; Here are example diffs to replicate for 'preprint' and for 'standard' and 'dataset'.
    • (2.1) If the citoid map in the citation template used for these types of references is missing, one will need to be added. (2.2) If the citoid map does exist, the TemplateData will need to be updated to include new field names. Here are example updates for 'preprint' and for 'standard' and 'dataset'. The new fields that may need to be supported are archiveID, identifier, repository, organization, repositoryLocation, committee, and versionNumber. [7]
  • One new wiki has been created: a Wikipedia in Central Kanuri (w:knc:) [8]
  • Recurrent item View all 27 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, the OCR (optical character recognition) tool used for Wikisource now supports a new language, Church Slavonic. [9]

Weekly highlight

Updates for editors

  • The "Special pages" portlet link will be moved from the "Toolbox" into the "Navigation" section of the main menu's sidebar by default. This change is because the Toolbox is intended for tools relating to the current page, not tools relating to the site, so the link will be more logically and consistently located. To modify this behavior and update CSS styling, administrators can follow the instructions at T385346. [10]
  • As part of this year's work around improving the ways readers discover content on the wikis, the Web team will be running an experiment with a small number of readers that displays some suggestions for related or interesting articles within the search bar. Please check out the project page for more information.
  • Advanced item Template editors who use TemplateStyles can now customize output for users with specific accessibility needs by using accessibility related media queries (prefers-reduced-motion , prefers-reduced-transparency , prefers-contrast , and forced-colors ). Thanks to user Bawolff for these improvements. [11]
  • Recurrent item View all 22 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, the global blocks log will now be shown directly on the Special:CentralAuth page, similarly to global locks, to simplify the workflows for stewards. [12]

Updates for technical contributors

  • Wikidata now supports a special language as a "default for all languages" for labels and aliases. This is to avoid excessive duplication of the same information across many languages. If your Wikidata queries use labels, you may need to update them as some existing labels are getting removed. [13]
  • The function getDescription was invoked on every Wiki page read and accounts for ~2.5% of a page's total load time. The calculated value will now be cached, reducing load on Wikimedia servers. [14]
  • As part of the RESTBase deprecation effort, the /page/related endpoint has been blocked as of February 6, 2025, and will be removed soon. This timeline was chosen to align with the deprecation schedules for older Android and iOS versions. The stable alternative is the "morelike" action API in MediaWiki, and a migration example is available. The MediaWiki Interfaces team can be contacted for any questions. [15]

In depth

  • The latest quarterly Language and Internationalization newsletter is available. It includes: Updates about the "Contribute" menu; details on some of the newest language editions of Wikipedia; details on new languages supported by the MediaWiki interface; updates on the Community-defined lists feature; and more.
  • The latest Chart Project newsletter is available. It includes updates on the progress towards bringing better visibility into global charts usage and support for categorizing pages in the Data namespace on Commons.

Weekly highlight

  • Communities using growth tools can now showcase one event on the Special:Homepage for newcomers. This feature will help newcomers to be informed about editing activities they can participate in. Administrators can create a new event to showcase at Special:CommunityConfiguration. To learn more about this feature, please read the Diff post, have a look at the documentation, or contact the Growth team.

Updates for editors

Highlighted talk pages improvements
  • Starting next week, talk pages at these wikis – Spanish Wikipedia, French Wikipedia, Italian Wikipedia, Japanese Wikipedia – will get a new design. This change was extensively tested as a Beta feature and is the last step of talk pages improvements. [16]
  • You can now navigate to view a redirect page directly from its action pages, such as the history page. Previously, you were forced to first go to the redirect target. This change should help editors who work with redirects a lot. Thanks to user stjn for this improvement. [17]
  • When a Cite reference is reused many times, wikis currently show either numbers like "1.23" or localized alphabetic markers like "a b c" in the reference list. Previously, if there were so many reuses that the alphabetic markers were all used, an error message was displayed. As part of the work to modernize Cite customization, these errors will no longer be shown and instead the backlinks will fall back to showing numeric markers like "1.23" once the alphabetic markers are all used.
  • The log entries for each change to an editor's user-groups are now clearer by specifying exactly what has changed, instead of the plain before and after listings. Translators can help to update the localized versions. Thanks to user Msz2001 for these improvements.
  • A new filter has been added to the Special:Nuke tool, which allows administrators to mass delete pages, to enable users to filter for pages in a range of page sizes (in bytes). This allows, for example, deleting pages only of a certain size or below. [18]
  • Non-administrators can now check which pages are able to be deleted using the Special:Nuke tool. Thanks to user MolecularPilot for this and the previous improvements. [19]
  • Recurrent item View all 25 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, a bug was fixed in the configuration for the AV1 video file format, which enables these files to play again. [20]

Updates for technical contributors

  • Parsoid Read Views is going to be rolling out to most Wiktionaries over the next few weeks, following the successful transition of Wikivoyage to Parsoid Read Views last year. For more information, see the Parsoid/Parser Unification project page. [21] [22]
  • Developers of tools that run on-wiki should note that mw.Uri is deprecated. Tools requiring mw.Uri must explicitly declare mediawiki.Uri as a ResourceLoader dependency, and should migrate to the browser native URL API soon. [23]

Updates for editors

  • Administrators can now customize how the Babel feature creates categories using Special:CommunityConfiguration/Babel. They can rename language categories, choose whether they should be auto-created, and adjust other settings. [24]
  • The wikimedia.org portal has been updated – and is receiving some ongoing improvements – to modernize and improve the accessibility of our portal pages. It now has better support for mobile layouts, updated wording and links, and better language support. Additionally, all of the Wikimedia project portals, such as wikibooks.org , now support dark mode when a reader is using that system setting. [25] [26] [27]
  • One new wiki has been created: a Wiktionary in Santali (wikt:sat:) [28]
  • Recurrent item View all 30 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, a bug was fixed that prevented clicking on search results in the web-interface for some Firefox for Android phone configurations. [29]

Meetings and events

  • The next Language Community Meeting is happening soon, February 28th at 14:00 UTC. This week's meeting will cover: highlights and technical updates on keyboard and tools for the Sámi languages, Translatewiki.net contributions from the Bahasa Lampung community in Indonesia, and technical Q&A.
