There seems to be very limited enthusiasm for this. Many people have put their names on the list of participants, but don't seem willing to go much further. I did start something at Wikimedia Canada/Incorporation but that has not attracted any attention at all. While I am certainly willing to participate in the work of putting together a federal non-profit organization, it would be very unwiki for me to write up a set of by-laws by myself and impose it on everybody else. I know from past experience that by-laws are something that members would prefer to avoid, but they are a necessary aspect of a legally functioning organization.

I started with the basic question: Who will be a legal member? I chose to begin with that question because it is the most difficult to answer, and would really appreciate some response.

I plan to attend Wikimania in Boston. It would be great if a national founding meeting were held just after that (perhaps on the Tuesday or Wednesday), most likely in Montreal. That would make it conceivable for those of us in the west to perhaps drive down as a group from Montreal to Boston. It would be good to have the paperwork ready to sign for that meeting. If no such meeting is planned it could be easier for me to fly directly to Boston from Vancouver, or take a US domestic flight from Seattle. (I will already have been in Quebec in early July for other reasons.)

For now I am only sending this to the two people who IMHO seem most involved with this idea. Maybe we can work together to get something going. Eclecticology 22:33, 13 March 2006 (UTC) Reply

I should have noticed your reply earlier, but because I do tax work I have no choice but to curb my Wikiholism during April. This is the first time since that I have even looked in Meta. I too am disappointed by the response, and I saw the long list of people who expend all thrir energy waiting for Godot. Democracy is a nice concept, but many fail to realize that its success depends on their positive participation. If you wait for most of these people to make positive contributions nothing will ever get done. I have drafted by-laws for organizations before, and my experience is that most people don't read them at all and say nothing until they misinterpret some clause as contrary to their personal interests. It may very well be that the only practical approach to putting a formal organisation will be for a small committee will do the work, and hopefully avoid the controversy that has come out of the Dutch organization when a similar thing happened
Who will be a member of the federal organization is a crucial question. For practical purposes, given the nature of Canadian geography, most future activity will be at the provincial level. A federal organisation should co-ordinate the legal relationships between the various provincial bodies as well as be concerned with international dealings with the Wikimedia Foundation on the use of trademarks, domain names, etc. It can then deal with matters of authorising provincial sub-domains, and co-ordinate the application of tax-deductibly raised funds, which, under the Income Tax Act, cannot simply be shipped out of the country to fund international operations.
As for a possible Montreal meeting after Wikimania in Boston, I have had responses from both Notafish and Anthere saying that they would very much consider attending before going back to Europe if they had long enough advance notice. Eclecticology 18:26, 30 April 2006 (UTC) Reply

I'm wondering if you are still involved in this. v:User:Historybuff 23:39, 8 April 2007 (UTC) Reply

I have done some work on the by-laws at Wikimedia Canada/Incorporation, and I have done a NUANS search for "Wikimedia Canada". There are no apparent name conflicts, so the name is reserved for 90 days. Are you still interested in being one of the original three directors required for incorporation? Alternatively, is there someone else from Quebec with his feet on the ground, who would like this role? I have also asked Zanimum if he wants to be one of the original directors.

So far the by-laws are only in English; the thought of writing in French legalese makes me shudder. It's perfectly acceptable to have the by-laws and other paperwork in one official language only. Those who think we should have a French set as well should work to write that themselves, and they can be added later as an amendment. The amount of interest that there has been in this task in English has been notably absent, and I don't expect that the situation would be any better in French.

Please let me hear from you. Eclecticology 10:01, 10 October 2007 (UTC) Reply

Hey Stéphane Thibault,

I wanted to ask for your help. As you may be aware we have been running banners on many language wikis. We have a lot of new content this year and I really want to conduct a thorough review of our translations. This is a combination of feedback from the community, readers, donors as well as those with professional translator experience. This will help us ensure the highest quality of translations used in our messaging.

To help us out with this I wonder if you would be willing to give us feedback in french using This Link

Simply follow the simple instructions on that page and if you have any questions feel free to contact me on my talk page.

Many Thanks
