Question re: your August 2021 enwiki AN thread

Latest comment: 3 years ago 2 comments2 people in discussion

Hi Mike Peel! I don't think I've had the opportunity to communicate with you directly in my time here before these elections, and was looking into your editing history to be better informed for the community election period. I'm concerned by the discussion linked above, notably that it may have been an involved action, doubling down on the unblock contrary to community consensus and input from people experienced in copyright enforcement processes, and inflated expectations for the other administrators involved to mentor the user you unblocked, among other communication-related concerns. Especially this. That discussion indicates that there have been difficulties with the extent to which you effectively collaborate with contributors in different areas of work and with different specialties. I know it has been a year since then, and a year since the last Board elections. If you have the time, I'm interested to know what you feel you have learned from the encounters in that AN thread, and if the way you approach similar situations has changed since then. Best regards, Vermont 🐿️ (talk) 16:26, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

@Vermont: That's a fair question - I was wondering if this would come back up. Although I still have issues with the situation that arose then, and the way it was handled (particularly given Clem's long history in the Wikimedia projects), I did have a conflict of interest and I should not have gotten involved. I subsequently made a commitment not to unblock editors without training/mentoring, which I have stuck to. I do push things that I believe are right (which, to be transparent, has actually brought me up at Wikidata's AN at the moment, see d:Wikidata:Administrators'_noticeboard#User:Mike_Peel_keeping_not_notable_items). However, fundamentally, I believe in consensus, and I listen to what others say - and change my perspective based on their factual input (I'm a scientist as well as a Wikimedian, that's sort of natural now!). Relating to our earlier discussion on participation, I've noticed that lately I've missed a lot of consultations until it was too late to discuss the issue I cared about. For instance, I supported the Universal Code of Conduct in principle, but I felt there were some serious issues with the phrasing of some of it; but I didn't hear about it until the text had been finalized. I have strong opinions on some goals of the Movement Strategy, but I didn't hear about it until I was asked how best to implement the already-decided-upon goals. I didn't see any notice of the BoT-election call for community questions, though I heard about the election when it started. No doubt I could keep a calendar and hunt out consultations I might want to participate in once a week or some such, but this is a hobby for me. When I miss these things, it's frustrating and makes me feel disenfranchised. I also feel less willing to participate in similar consultations, which is worrying.

Is there a list I could subscribe to that would give me notice of all WMF consultations? Or a page listing them? HLHJ (talk) 14:11, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

@HLHJ: Probably the best place is wikimedia-l - or wikimediaannounce-l, which is lower traffic (just announcements, no discussion). Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:02, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
