In May 2020, several Wikimedians recorded two webinars about wiki content campaigns. The purpose of this page is just to compose the description, and gather links, etc. for the webinars' pages on Commons and/or YouTube.

Content Improvement Campaigns on Wikipedia, Part 1

The WikiChallenge Ecoles d'Afrique (Schools of Africa) is a multi-national writing contest that helps students age 9-13 to learn how knowledge is built. Students contribute to Vikidia, a "little sister" of Wikipedia dedicated to children. The challenge has run every year since the 2017-18 school year. All of the schools are in French-speaking Africa and most of them are... offline! Many of the kids have never heard of Wikipedia; many have never been online. Schools compete by writing articles about something in their area (village, notable person, or a local historic or geographic feature) on Vikidia. Content can then be transferred to Wikipedia. The WikiFundi platform, which works on a local WiFi network, can address the absence of internet. Young Africans learn about their communities, cultures, role models and environments, learn to share knowledge, and increase their digital skills. Panelist Florence Devouard (aka Anthere) has been editing wikis since 2002. She is a former Chairwoman of the Wikimedia Foundation, and the co-founder of Wikimedia France and Wiki in Africa. She leads international projects related to Gender Gap and Africa.

Wiki Loves Monuments is an annual international photographic competition held every September since 2010, organized by Wikimedia community members and affiliates. In 2011 it won the Guinness Book of World Records for largest photo competition. Our panelist Kevin Payravi, a Wikimedian and software engineer from Texas, is a co-organizer of WLM in the United States.

Wiki Women in Red is an all-volunteer, international community of editors who address gender-related bias in wiki content. Participants create women's biographies and articles on women's works and women's issues. The objective is to increase the percentage of women-related articles by turning redlinks (indicating the absence of an article) into blue ones. Women in Red organizes about five virtual campaigns each month. Each campaign focuses on a topic like occupation, geographic region, or time period. Since the initiative began in 2014, biographies of women on English Wikipedia have grown from 15.53% 18.46%. Our panelist Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight, a Wikipedian since 2007, chair of the Wikimedia Foundation's Affiliations Committee, and Northeastern University Visiting Scholar, co-founded the initiative with Roger Bamkin in 2014.

PaceTrack is a project tracking tool, currently in development, for Wikipedia editing campaigns. Its purpose is help campaign organizers track progress towards a goal. PaceTrack is open source and available for anyone to use, remix, or submit ideas via github. The project is built around two basic design concepts: (1) to give campaigns a set goal they can use to make progress towards. Borrowing from experience with other wiki campaigns, the idea is that having a list makes it easier for a group to drive forward. (2) to find a space between WikiProjects on one hand, which have broad topics and no set deadline, and editathons on the other hand, which are usually a focused, in-person sprint. PaceTrack aims to provide a useful tool for campaigns, which are longer than a single editathon and more clearly defined than a WikiProject. PaceTrack was initially designed to support the News on Wiki campaign. Panelist Stephen LaPorte, a longtime Wikimedian and a lawyer for the Wikimedia Foundation, is building PaceTrack with Mahmoud Hashemi.

The News On Wiki campaign makes information about news sources accessible to the public. Its core premise, based on research by Eni Mustafaraj et. al., is that wiki content drives the content of Knowledge Panels on web search result pages. If we ensure that Wikipedia and Wikidata contain information about news sources, we can impact on the public's ability to distinguish between real and "fake" news outlets. The campaign was started in 2018 by Mike Caulfield, with financial support from Paul and Susan Haahr. Panelist Pete Forsyth has been editing wikis since 2004. He owns Wiki Strategies, a Wikipedia training and consulting agency, and has been invited to speak at universities including Princeton, Harvard, the University of Mississippi, and North Carolina State. He has been published or quoted in publications including the Signpost, New York Times, Washington Post, Suddeutsche Zeitung, and the Creative Commons blog.

The Wiki Global CheckIn is a chance to collaborate with members of the global Wikimedia community and gather snapshots of life during this historical moment we are all witnessing worldwide. Conceived during the global COVID-19 pandemic, it began Saturday, May 16th, 2020. Widespread interest lead the organizers to extend it from 24 hours to 100 days, so it will last until August 22, 2020! We hope you will continue to leave messages and entries for this effort. Panelist Sherry Antoine is a New York-based outreach consultant and speaker committed to addressing gender and diversity gaps. She is lead organizer of the Wikimedians of the Caribbean Wikimedia User Group and executive director of AfroCROWD, an outreach initiative and Wikimedia user group which seeks to increase awareness among people of African descent of Wikimedia and the free knowledge, culture, and software movements.

Moderator Sheldon Rampton is a journalist, entrepreneur and founder of SourceWatch, a non-Wikipedia wiki intended to collect well-documented information about corporate public relations (PR) campaigns.
