Template talk:UserSummary
Add topicAnother update of style? This one feels like it can fit lots more stuff, so if you have good things to include, let me know. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 06:01, 17 April 2008 (UTC) Reply
User:Example (Google) (Luxo's | Purodha's) Reports: COIBot | search an, ani, cn, an3 | enwiki noticeboards | LinkWatcher
Some clarification, I guess...
- Google searches for User:Whatever
- Luxo's is the global contribs tool (also lists blocks)
- Purodha's lists all wikis with a user, including user groups, edit counts and links to their user page and talk page and the wiki
- Links are the local pages (maybe not useful? remove them and make room for something better?)
- meta and enwiki link to (in order) userpage, talk page, contributions, deleted contributions, the user's log entries (ie stuff they did), log entries for the user (ie stuff done to them)
- Note that the arrows there indicate which way the action happened. the left-pointing arrow shows that the user did some action to the logs, and that's what you see when clicking on the left one :)
- search meta and search en will do a Google search on those sites
- Again, there's plenty of room here for more useful things – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 06:13, 17 April 2008 (UTC) Reply
This makes sense, generally on this wiki there are not huge lists of usersummary templates (which happens on en wiki sometimes; by the way, we there also have {{IPSummary}}, more suitable for IPs). Nice layout! --Dirk Beetstra T C (en: U, T) 10:41, 17 April 2008 (UTC) Reply
- Mike, this looks beautiful!
- Suggestions:
- Ditch the IP stuff and instead work your magic on {{IPSummary}} which is a version of {{UserSummary}} that was adapted for IPs.
- Since users aren't supposed to use "subst" with {{IPSummary}}, {{UserSummary}} or {{LinkSummary}}, those templates get updated wherever they're used whenever we improve our tools. If you work your magic on {{IPSummary}}, it will automatically update all the existing instances of that template.
- Any IP templates should include CompleteWhois and traceroute; these are currently included in {{IPSummary}}. CompleteWhois is better for blacklisted IPs than other reports (when it's working!)
- All of these free tools (CompleteWhois, robtex, ippages, etc.) come and go with the vagaries of their developers and their hosts. That's also true of stuff on the Wikimedia tool server. I think this just comes with the word "free". We normally leave tool links in our templates even when a tool is down since they usually are back up in a few weeks.
- I suggest just having Google search on the user name or IP without the "User:" prefix. Google searching an IP can turn up its presence on Project Honeypot or on some list of open proxies. Many spammers use the same user name in SEO forums, etc as they do on Wikipedia -- it's useful to see what else is out there. Sometimes, for instance, they'll have a Digg or Stumbleupon page that they've listed all their domains on.
- Likewise, I'd leave the "User:" prefix off the meta and en.wikipedia searches.
- Ditch the IP stuff and instead work your magic on {{IPSummary}} which is a version of {{UserSummary}} that was adapted for IPs.
- Thanks for all your work on this. --A. B. (talk) 21:31, 18 April 2008 (UTC) Reply
- Updates & working on IPSummary now. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:21, 18 April 2008 (UTC) Reply
I have updated the template to remove the dead links, and updated the coding to use internal and/or relative urls where possible. We may need to redo the graphic for the documentation. billinghurst sDrewth 07:04, 28 November 2011 (UTC) Reply

In the template, there are three Google links that are hardcoded to use HTTP. At the same time, HTTPS would work for these links, and would provide greater security and privacy for users. The links that should be changed are as follows:
http://www.google.com/search?q={{urlencode:{{{1|Example}}}}}+site:commons.wikimedia.org
should be changed tohttps://www.google.com/search?q={{urlencode:{{{1|Example}}}}}+site:commons.wikimedia.org
http://www.google.com/search?q={{urlencode:{{{1|Example}}}}}
should be changed tohttps://www.google.com/search?q={{urlencode:{{{1|Example}}}}}
http://www.google.com/search?q={{urlencode:{{{1|Example}}}}}+site:en.wikipedia.org
should be changed tohttps://www.google.com/search?q={{urlencode:{{{1|Example}}}}}+site:en.wikipedia.org

parameter to no to reactivate your request.Hello, can the Urlencode be removed for the CentralAuth link? Should work as a normal wikilink. Currently it gives errors, for instance if there is a space (converted to +) in the username. Sa vh ñ 11:49, 22 January 2021 (UTC) Reply

Please replace the content of this template with the sandbox version. I fixed some broken links, escaped pipes and removed leading/succeeding blank lines. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 05:16, 14 June 2022 (UTC) Reply

). The old version gave [1]: an unordered list contains only one blank list item (<ul><li></li></ul>
