Page translation

Latest comment: 6 years ago 6 comments3 people in discussion

@Abdeaitali: @Reda benkhadra: @Touzrimounir: Thanks for making this page! Would you guys mind making or arranging to have made a French version? This would be crucial since Morocco has many French-speaking people. Thanks!

Also if the tabs now are Arabic / English, perhaps they could be made into Arabic / English / French WhisperToMe (talk) 05:10, 5 November 2018 (UTC) Reply

Thanks for your comment, I have translated the page to French now. However, the tabs become messy for 3 different languages at a time, for now we use Arabic (conference language) + English (international speakers). Abdeaitali (talk) 09:49, 5 November 2018 (UTC) Reply
Abdeaitali, I made the template translatable as well, so you can add French tabs there, too: [1] --Ата (talk) 14:09, 6 November 2018 (UTC) Reply
Done, thanks :) Ата but there are some issues with the tabs now in other page like this one https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiArabia_2019/Scholarships -- Abdeaitali (talk) 15:30, 6 November 2018 (UTC) Reply
Oh yes, thanks for reminding, I will make needed changes now. The point is that translatable templates should be inserted in {{TNT}}, when used on other pages, as this: {{TNT|WikiArabia/2019/header}}. --Ата (talk) 15:55, 6 November 2018 (UTC) Reply
Perfect, thanks Ата once again :) -- Abdeaitali (talk) 13:32, 7 November 2018 (UTC) Reply

Tabs navigation in other languages

[edit ]
Latest comment: 6 years ago 3 comments2 people in discussion

Hey User:Ата, I noticed that when navigating the tabs in other languages, clicking on a tab will lead to the page in English. Is there a way to keep the navigation in the same language? Thanks! -- Abdeaitali (talk) 13:59, 8 November 2018 (UTC) Reply

Translation system depends on the interface language of the user. E.g. if one has French as their interface language, they will see all tabs in French. --Ата (talk) 15:48, 8 November 2018 (UTC) Reply
I see, thanks User:Ата -- Abdeaitali (talk) 19:31, 8 November 2018 (UTC) Reply

Wikipedia Cultural Diversity Observatory: Phase 2 Monitoring the Culture Gap

[edit ]
Latest comment: 5 years ago 1 comment1 person in discussion

I am writing to tell you that the project Wikipedia Cultural Diversity Observatory (WCDO) has presented a plan for a second phase to extend the project and provide tools based on the data collected. This project might be useful for future interlanguage or geographical collaborations such as Wikiarabia. As a reminder, the WCDO aims at providing valuable strategic data in order to fight for more cultural diversity in each Wikipedia language edition. In the previous phase, we collected the Cultural Context Content (CCC) datasets for all 300 language editions and provided some top priority articles for different topics such as women-men, geolocated, among others (named Top CCC articles). The infrastructure for the project has been set (datasets and website). In this new phase, we plan to create many more tools and visualizations: Top CCC article lists based on community member suggestions, but most importantly, to create a tool to monitor the gaps on a monthly basis and serve it as a newsletter. This way editors are able to constantly see the efforts dedicated to create geolocated articles or cultural context content more in general related to other language editions. Also, we plan to research on marginalized languages in order to see which have more potential to become a new Wikipedia language edition, start creating content about their cultural context ("decolonizing the Internet"), and increase the overall cultural diversity of the project. Most of the project efforts are dedicated to data-compiling and analysis. However, there is a lot of work to do in disseminating the results and tools so they can create more impact in helping local events such as contests. If you think you can join the project, please write us at tools.wcdo@tools.wmflabs.org. If you consider this may be helpful, please help us, provide some feedback and endorse the project. You take a look at the project plan here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/WCDO/Culture_Gap_Monthly_Monitoring Thanks in advance for your time. All the feedback is welcome. Translating the program (into Arabic)

Hey @Ата:, we have now published the program (in English). Do you know of some way to make it translatable (into Arabic) as it is now? -- Abdeaitali (talk) 14:55, 25 September 2019 (UTC) Reply

Hi Abdeaitali, I marked WikiArabia 2019/Program for translation. Now, several things to pay attention to, since the program is subject to change (if you already know this, good, but I have to be sure):
  • as you can see, titles of the sessions and names of the presenters are separate translation units;
  • if you need to change the position of the session in the program, please move the whole table sell with it; don't change number of the translation unit (which looks like <!--T:10-->);
  • if you add totally new text that will have to be translated, just put it into <translate></translate> tags, this is enough; you don't need these T:xx numbers to be in numerical order on the page;
  • when you know the names of the presenters where there is now "TBD", just replace this abbreviation with the actual name(s).
Feel free to ping me to mark the page for translation after the new info is added to the page. Have in mind, that when a page is a draft it's better to wait till it becomes more or less stable, so that translators do not do unnecessary work. --Ата (talk) 17:36, 25 September 2019 (UTC) Reply
Two more points, just in case:
  • when you need to move a whole translation unit somewhere, you can just move it as it is with the corresponding tags. E.g. instead of deleting <translate><!--T:55--> Meet-ups</translate> in one place and then adding new meet-ups in another, the whole thing can just be moved.
  • there is no need to manually add T:xx numbers. They are added automatically when the page is marked for translation.
Reda benkhadra, I'm mentioning you, too, since you also edited the page -- Ата (talk) 15:02, 26 September 2019 (UTC) Reply
Thank you very much Ата, I will inform my friends working with updating the program. -- Abdeaitali (talk) 14:09, 27 September 2019 (UTC) Reply

Hi WikiArabia 2019 organisers! While you will be meeting in Marrakesh, German-language WikiCon 2019 will be held in Wuppertal, Germany (فوبرتال). Because of this, Hogü-456, Anneke Wolf, and I would like to put together a little video call or an exchange of video messages between the two synchronous conferences. What do you think about this idea? Pinging Zeinebtakouti and Anass Sedrati. --Gnom (talk) Let's make Wikipedia green! 21:44, 28 September 2019 (UTC) Reply
