Talk:Translation of the week/2004 translations/Archive
Start?
When is a new round of proposing articles started? Waerth 14:00, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Maybe there should be a caveat that candidate topics aren't necessarily implemented as featured-quality articles, and should be fact-checked before or during translation -- ideally before. A-giâu 17:28, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Candidates for next week(s)
- I suggest articles related to w:fr:Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, fr:Le Petit Prince, ...
- Plase take a look at the overview (also on a link list) available at w:fr:Discuter:Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Thanks Gangleri 05:23, 2004 Nov 6 (UTC)

"Languages in which you can help"
Please, try to be more specific. As a German translator (meaning, my mother tongue and target language are German), I can help a lot of colleagues of other languages to understand a German text, as long as we find a common language for communication (in my case English, German, and French). But, I only can translate from English to German, and from French to German, and never the other way round. So, what should I enter as "Languages in which I can help"? As far as translations are concerned, it's only German. --wpopp 18:53, 2004 Nov 7 (UTC)
Maybe we should list the languages in a different style. I.e. if you can translate Swedish to Norwegian, but not visa versa, write "Swedish → (or {\displaystyle \mapsto }) Norwegian". If both ways, "Swedish {\displaystyle \leftrightarrow } Norwegian". You really need to master at least two languages to translate text, now many have listed only one language :) --Kooo 12:54, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Reworking of the Week
I've yet to do an actual translation of the week. So far, each of the articles for me has required reworking. One of the prominent problems so far is unclear references: "Peter saw Paul and his brother".
The other is "first paragraphs" that do not actually end at the end of the first paragraph, or have other unresolved issues that require the addition of further material.
It may be that this is actually a cultural problem, where references are obvious in some culture but not so in others, but even so: Is there a way to either streamline the articles before voting, or to do so with the selected one before the start of the translation period? - If we chose the articles one week in advance, the translators could ask about ambiguities etc. in the articles discussion-page. The original contributors could also be asked, they'd have a week to work on the article. --Kooo 03:18, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Chosing the articles in advance would probably just move the moment of translation, as we'd only encounter the problems when actually translating. The discussion-page would be better, except that when we start with already an English language translation, we get two discussion pages. Would the persons who propose pages, also be willing to keep an eye on the original discussion page and the English first copy? That probably would ease the proces, but would it also scare away potential TOTW-contributors? Aliter 16:18, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)
