Equity

Latest comment: 1 year ago 1 comment1 person in discussion

I like this glossary in general and find it helpful. For me, a longtime Wikimedian, I am familiar with most terms used but have problem with this one, Equity. It pops up very frequently the last couple of years and for me I do not really understand it. I have no objection to the text you provide, and it actually helps me a bit. But if I am not alone grasping this concept, it could be helpful you elaborated a bit more on it in this glossary like expanding how it could/should be used and in what context. Affiliates: (from 2026 onward), this comment is hard to digest, nothing is decided, so how could this then be stated?

Wikimedia Foundation:I believe their legal role is stronger than you state. They must be the (ultimate) legal authority for all movement entities, including Global council and all activity holders described in this charter Anders Wennersten (talk) 11:11, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the reminder, 511KeV. I assume you refer to translation unit 79; that has been fixed. Let me know if you still have issues. Best, RamzyM (WMF) (talk) 14:54, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Justice, to complement Equity?

Latest comment: 7 months ago 1 comment1 person in discussion

In the sense of the "Equality v Equity v Justice" meme -- I believe what the strategy is pointing towards is not just temporary equity (of outcomes) but long-term justice (removing inequality that feeds inequity -- here, inequality in context, access, sources, depth of reliable tertiary databases and secondary media outlets, communities of expertise and mentorship, &c).

I haven't seen that language in use, but I have seen equity explicitly used in the sense of a short-term rebalancing or reallocation of resources, so some other term would be useful as well. Pursuing this sense of a just, robust, stable ecosystem would mean greater focus on capacity building, mutual support, local self-sufficiency, &c.
