Proposed additions
- Proposed usernames can be checked at toollabs:meta/gusersearch/
Indian phone number spam usernames
Consider the regex
.*91( |\-)[0-9]{10}.*
. I added this locally to stop a barrage of spammy usernames, but apparently this has no effect on usernames locally, only titles. Since I see no good reason for a username of this form, it would be great if this could be added as a new account-only entry on this blacklist.--Jasper Deng (talk) 21:11, 24 November 2017 (UTC) Reply
- @Jasper Deng: account names only? Or do you see that we are having problems with article names as well, remembering that this is a xwiki impact to be checked — billinghurst sDrewth 22:43, 24 November 2017 (UTC) Reply
- @Billinghurst: affect only account creations / account names. Tropicalkitty (talk) 23:07, 24 November 2017 (UTC) Reply
- @Billinghurst: Accounts only. Any article issues will be handled by the local blacklist.--Jasper Deng (talk) 02:41, 25 November 2017 (UTC) Reply
- I agree with this addition, there's 5-6 per day now. Crow (talk) 19:35, 3 December 2017 (UTC) Reply
- Done Noting that for single character matches we don't need to capture, and we can use the syntax for digit \d. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:00, 4 December 2017 (UTC) Reply
- Might want to modify the regex slightly to make the dash-space-etc optional, as they've circumvented the TBL already by omitting it. Suggest
.*91.?*\d{10}.*
Crow (talk) 20:42, 6 December 2017 (UTC) Reply
- @Crow: that then just becomes a string of 12 or more numbers anywhere in a user name with 91. That is too vague, so what else exists that is unique to this? Examples would help. It also sounds as this is manual additions, so it becomes whack-a-mole, and using title blacklist for that is somewhat ineffective, or just one of a number of concerted efforts with range blocks, abuse filters, etc.
- @Billinghurst: Yes unfortunately at its core it is just an international phone number in country code 91. They do use a couple of other terms in their names (astrolog(er|y), love specialist, vashikaran, etc). But by the looks of the below comment, they've already started removing the 91 from the numbers or are just in a different country. Adding individual numbers would be chasing our tail, agreed. A while ago at enwiki there was discussion on blocking any 10-digit number from a username, which might be extreme as a long term solution, but perhaps is worth discussing as a short term solution (i.e. they spend an hour trying to circumvent, then give up?). I don't know, just throwing pasta at the walls to see what sticks... Crow (talk) 18:18, 9 December 2017 (UTC) Reply

- billinghurst Sir, Does it really works globally? See w:hi:Special:Contributions/Love_spells_9680187323_vedic_astrology_predictions, They create their account on 9 Dec with India Number at hiwiki.--Jayprakash >>> Talk 16:33, 9 December 2017 (UTC) Reply
- @Crow and Jayprakash12345: Yes the title blacklist does work, it just needs the right regular expressions. Examples always help, especially if one is not seeing the described problems on their usual ramblings. I would suggest that we look to build a list of typical examples and problems at Vandalism reports or a specific subpage to there. That enables a crosswiki approach, and hopefully a crosswiki solution where we can plan blacklists, IP ranges and abuse filters. We know that it will never be 100% effective, and presumably it is cheap labour, however, doing nothing is less effective in taking reasonable measures.
Re regex for telephone numbers, I don't see an issue with putting that in place where we have done it in a consultative means, identifying any problems, and there is a general consensus of the communities. We don't want what could be seen as a unilateral action by a couple of admins at meta; nor one wiki imposing their will on all. — billinghurst sDrewth 23:59, 9 December 2017 (UTC) Reply

Can someone please globally blacklist "919929669787" from usernames? An LTA spammer is creating multiple accounts with usernames containing that string of numbers. Hastiness (talk) 21:15, 15 December 2017 (UTC) Reply
Vicky Kadian
Please block any article title "Vicky Kadian", "Vicky Kadïañ", "Vicky Kadïan", "Vìçky Kádïáñ", "Kadian Vikki", "विक्की कादियान" or any variants. It is (repeatedly deleted) crosswiki self promotion about global locked sock account Vicky Kadian [1], [2]. Been going on for months, hundreds of sock accounts, hundred of deleted articles. A small selection:

Bad regex
The line

contains an extra ')' near the end. Anomie (talk) 16:45, 3 December 2017 (UTC) Reply
- Done, thanks. If you have a means to in situ better test for bad regex, then please point to it. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:53, 4 December 2017 (UTC) Reply
- The best solution would be for gerrit:330326 to be finished. A comment there from people active in maintaining this page might spur it along.
- I suppose as an interim measure I could request approval here to have en:User:AnomieBOT check the syntax and report bad lines here, if that would be useful. Anomie (talk) 14:51, 4 December 2017 (UTC) Reply
