Project idea

[edit ]

What is the problem you're trying to solve?

[edit ]

What problem are you trying to solve by doing this project? This problem should be small enough that you expect it to be completely or mostly resolved by the end of this project. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

We have only a few articles in Italian Wikipedia about Jehovah's Witnesses minority and no exixt biographies about people and families of Witnesses who suffered persecution or lost their lives in concentration and extermination camps. Biographies of which we have various historical information from the Israeli Yad Vashem and the American United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM)

Involvement of sub or non represented groups represented in writing their own story about the Holocaust in Wikipedia (ethnic groups, non binary people) Some examples of important institutions and historians who talk about Jehovah's Witnesses and their biographies:

The persecution of Jehovah's Witnesses is still relevant:
Museum Remains Deeply Concerned Over the Russian Government’s Persecution of Jehovah’s Witnesses - United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

What is your solution?

[edit ]

For the problem you identified in the previous section, briefly describe your how you would like to address this problem. We recognize that there are many ways to solve a problem. We’d like to understand why you chose this particular solution, and why you think it is worth pursuing. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
Give people the way to write themselves on Wikipedia (edit Wikipedia training, search for sources, partnership with associations and organizations that deal with Holocaust etc)

For January 27th, 2021 the topic will be the Jehovah's Witnesses, a religious minority who in Nazi Germany kept their principles by refusing to participate in military service for training in the war and refused to give the Nazi salute that attributed to Hitler the Salvation.

Project goals

[edit ]

What are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
Encourage unrepresented people to write on Wikipedia and upload on Commons historical fats and document about the Holocaust The 27 January 2021 day's program will have the following development - and without going into details - has the following purposes:

  • Editathon concerning missing biographies of Jehovah's Witnesses. This way, our encyclopedia will be enriched with entries concerning a theme in which it is lacking today, so that at the end of the editathon, it will be more useful and valid for its readers.
  • Exhibition of 40 panels (open to the public of the Memorial Museum), where our specially trained wikipedian guides will explain each panel history to visitors, in a guided tour that aims to direct the visitor to support Wikimedia projects (as a first step by enrolling in the association) and to write also on Wikipedia encyclopedia, contributing on subjects of their knowledge.
  • Conference with three important, national and international, historians of the Shoah, all academics and teachers in prestigious universities, all encyclopedic (they also have an article in Italian Wikipedia): Marcello Pezzetti and Claudio Vercelli from Italy and Detlef Garbe from Germany, scholars specialized in the history of the TdG in Nazi Germany too. The conference, open to the public, aims to demonstrate the synergies between our encyclopedia and the academic environment, so that the sources used by our project are also highly reliable.

Project impact

[edit ]

How will you know if you have met your goals?

[edit ]

For each of your goals, we’d like you to answer the following questions:

  1. During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)
  2. Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)

For each of your answers, think about how you will capture this information. Will you capture it with a survey? With a story? Will you measure it with a number? Remember, if you plan to measure a number, you will need to set a numeric target in your proposal (e.g. 45 people, 10 articles, 100 scanned documents). Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

As part of the Italian Wikipedia projects: Persecutions, deportations and crimes of the Nazi-Fascist period and Women and Shoah, some Italian Wikipedians for five years have established relationships with institutions that study, conduct conferences, seminars and exhibitions on persecutions suffered by different categories of people under Nazism and fascism.

Some of these prestigious institutions are:

Our Project interacts with these places and with the historians of these centers, profiting in developing the thousands of articles about Shoah, its crimes and related biographies. Historians such as Marcello Pezzetti, Gadi Luzzatto Voghera and Liliana Picciotto are just someone of these.

Every 27th January Wikipedian volunteers organize with the Milan Shoah Memorial, the most representative place of the Shoah in Italy, an editathon on specific topic.

In 2019 the topic was dedicated to the Shoah suffered by the Jews of Europe. In 2020 was dedicated to the Porrajmos of Roma, Sinti and Jennisch with success in mass media (national TV, national newspapers and radio). One of the things that hit the public opinion with a return of image for Wikimedia and Wikipedia that organized the meeting is that for the first time in Italy, Roma and Sinti edit their articles with the Wikipedians after a three-hour course and a following editathon. This impressed public opinion for the time spent by the Wikipedians to help Roma and Sinti to create new articles regarding their devastation under Nazism (Porrajmos). At the end of the work day, a conference followed on which historians and Wikipedians as well as Wikimedians spoke on the Porrajmos.

Talk about us

[edit ]

These are articles on italian newspapers about our old events:

We use Dashboard for the metrics.

Do you have any goals around participation or content?

[edit ]

Are any of your goals related to increasing participation within the Wikimedia movement, or increasing/improving the content on Wikimedia projects? If so, we ask that you look through these three metrics, and include any that are relevant to your project. Please set a numeric target against the metrics, if applicable. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
Our goals are increasing the participation of members of the Wikimedia movement, of ethnic or unrepresented groups, increasing/improving the content on the Wikimedia projects about Holocaust, and creating partnerships with associations and museums.

Activities

[edit ]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

We will invite historians to present the facts and historical documents about Holocaust, we will organize a base course about how to edit Wikipedia for the new users and we will have an edit-a-thon to envolve the expert users too.

  • An editathon of 30 people from the italian Project:Persecutions, deportations and crimes of the Nazi-Fascist period that type various articles about Jehovah's Witnesses and on the concentration camps, their experiences and their biographies in places of killings and resistance peaceful of these Christians.
  • An exhibition of 40 forex panels 50x60 format 1 cm thick that tells the life before, during and after the persecution of the German and European Jehovah's Witnesses and their perseverance in undergoing trials despite the fact that they could gain freedom by renouncing their faith ( which they refused to do)
  • Audiovisual (4) on films produced by the Watch Tower about the peaceful resistance of Jehovah's Witnesses in Europe
  • a conference with three historians relators: Marcello Pezzetti - Rome, Claudio Vercelli - Turin and Detlef Garbe - University of Hamburg (Germany). Important historians who wrote about the persecution of the Witnesses.

  • Support Support I attended the event in 2020 and it was a very intense and engaging experience. It is very important to continue this event regularly, because it reinforces partnerships and it really makes it a point of reference. The participation of the Rom and Sinti communities in 2020 started a unique and truly enriching cooperation: the event triggers the production of new content on complex and important topics and the atmosphere the organizers are capable of creating is beautiful. Consider also that this event takes place in Italy in a period of strong intolerance and racism: we really need it. iopensa (talk) 09:00, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
