How about modified naviagion box as above - it will be more vislble for everyone than relying on templates on particular pages. --Aphaia ++ 10:01, 21 August 2005 (UTC) Reply

I think that would end up much too long. I'm not convinced the sidebar is the place for this. Angela 10:20, 21 August 2005 (UTC) Reply
yep, it is a bit long; for usefulness it would be better to reduce in size.
I have convinced this ida for the foundation wiki originally since I had found some pages were almost dead-end (like "developers") on the site, I attemped to improve German and later Japanese pages with navigation footer but not yet convinced it works well. On the other hand, Wikimania wiki for non registered user seems to work well as for navigation. --Aphaia ++ 10:56, 21 August 2005 (UTC) Reply

I think that would end up much too long - why then do you want a long navigation template? I rather like Aphaia's idea - I support it. Dan100 11:51, 21 August 2005 (UTC) Reply

Because those are useful on specific pages used that are intended to be used by people who would find those links useful. The sidebar is relevant to everyone, so needs to be more general. Angela 06:29, 22 August 2005 (UTC) Reply
Agreed - so how about reducing to a few additional links following the four major role of meta on Meta:About;
  1. Babel (general discussion)
  2. Foundation page (perhaps Wikimedia Foundation
  3. (Essays - but I don't think we need it)
  4. Multilingualism or more practically Translation requests for coordination
  5. a certain tech cenralized page
So the sidebar can be kept not so long - just five or four additional links. --Aphaia ++ 19:51, 22 August 2005 (UTC) Reply

Is there any objection to adding a "permalink" in this sidebar. Since permanent links to the current version are now possible, I think it would be a useful addition for people who want to link to a version that they can be guaranteed is not vandalism. See MediaWiki:Permalink-url. Angela 06:29, 22 August 2005 (UTC) Reply

Sounds not a bad idea, but the link seems not to work. Aphaia ++
It works for me. What happens for you? An alternative is to have this permalink in the toolbox instead. See en: for example - it's below the "printable version" link. Angela 18:27, 24 August 2005 (UTC) Reply
It worked for me but I didn't understand the feature of permlin at that time ;( Anyway, it is already available on toolbox. --Aphaia ++ 05:18, 27 August 2005 (UTC) Reply

This Sidebarthing doesn't work

[edit ]
Latest comment: 19 years ago 1 comment1 person in discussion
  • I've created an article called "Sidebar" and entered the links I want.

Nothing happened. I've really tried everything. I moved the Article to the namespace of my wiki. I've used the translated version of my links. I've also tried it with the array in Localsettings.php (which shouldn't work with 1.5.0 any more)

Nothing worked. I'm still seeing the default navigation.

What else could I do? Or what did I do wrong?

Ah, the Namespace has to be "MediaWiki", despite of the Namespaces in your own Wiki.

That's correct. All mediawiki-special pages must exist in the reserved namespace "MediaWiki:" to avoid conflicting with articles. -24.61.76.204 01:48, 25 October 2005 (UTC) Reply
  • I have edited the existing MediaWiki:Sidebar page and added a new link.

It works in local on my machine, but it does not work when moving all the wiki on a www.free.fr account. Is it a known problem? Is there another way to change this navigation menu? - 15 May 2006

Latest comment: 17 years ago 1 comment1 person in discussion

i also do have problems with the mediawiki:sidebar - suddenly i cannot access the page. it's not like the side was restricted or blocked. i even cannot load the page. i get a blank page. i also cannot edit and save the current sidebar. or maybe i can save it but i cannot return to it.

edit: i cannot do anything with the sidebar but only when i am logged in. when i am not, i see the sidebar. wtf?

any ideas? thnx for help

Do you have a different skin selected? Maybe not logged-in people are seeing a different skin, and there's a problem with your selected skin (check in your user preferences) -- Harry Wood 13:41, 28 November 2006 (UTC) Reply

Linking to sections

[edit ]

On my website exampleproblems.com in the last version of wiki I could link to a section with a pound # but it doesn't work in 1.5.6. Here's a slice of code that used to work:

  1. Complex_Variables|Complex Variables
  2. Complex_Variables#Exponential_and_Log|---Exp and Log
  3. Complex_Variables#Residue_Calculus|---Residue Calculus
  4. Complex_Variables#Complex_Integration|---Complex Integrals
  5. Integral_Equations|Integral Equations

Now they all link to Complex_Variables. Thanks for any help.

change the color of the text

[edit ]
Latest comment: 17 years ago 2 comments1 person in discussion

How do I change the color of the text for the words "navigation", "search" and "toolbar"??

This should possible as a simple CSS change, but not sure actually. I notice the HTML doesn't give these bits a CSS class, so you may need to make HTML changes too
 <div class="portlet" id="p-navigation">
 		<h5>Navigation</h5>
		<div class="pBody">
-- Harry Wood 13:41, 28 November 2006 (UTC) Reply
Yeah. Now I've tested it out. The following works as a straightforward CSS change:
#p-navigation h5 { color:ORANGE }
#p-tb h5 { color:ORANGE }
#p-search h5 { color:ORANGE }
More elegant would be a CSS class for these three headings, but that's an HTML change.

I have created the page MediaWiki:SideBar on my wiki but changes to this page do not show up in the actual sidebar. I tried clearing the page cache, both in my browser and in MediWiki itself, as per the suggestions in the MediaWiki sidebar manual, but that didn't work. I want to change the text of the link that points to my home page to say "Main page", but, sadly, I can't (*sigh*).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I just wan't to say ditto to our MediaWiki:SideBar. My problem is that I can't split our navigation sidebar into sections. I can edit the text, and add new items, but it doesn't recognize new sections. Once I create a new section in the code, everything else below it is invisible to our wiki. In other words, if I type in the following:
  • Heading
    • Item 1
    • Item 2
  • Heading 2
    • Item 3
    • Item 4

Heading 2 through Item 4 isn't recognized by our wiki. Obviously I'm missing something. Any ideas? I can change Items 1 & 2, or even add more items in that top section, but nothing after "Heading 2" will show up. I've tried the cache thing, too, and that isn't the problem. I sure could use your help. 24.2.84.39 03:23, 16 April 2007 (UTC) Reply

This seems to be a common problem. Sysop, administrators, and beauracrats cannot edit sidebar. (They should be able to, so apparently we're all seeing a bug.)

Aphaia, Donate us --> Donate to us :-) Hillgentleman

Ah :( Thank you for your correction. By the way, it sounds a bit long. How about "Support us"? Or is it better to express that money matters explicitly? --Aphaia 21:49, 18 August 2007 (UTC) Reply
Either way is fine (Support us or Donate to us). Cbrown1023 talk 22:22, 18 August 2007 (UTC) Reply
I replaced the character "Donate" with "sitesupport" ([[[MediaWiki:Sitesupport]]), since the latter may give you your language version one but the former gives only "Donate" in every language setting. So if you prefer "donate", just modify MediaWiki:Sitesupport instead of this page directly. --Aphaia 22:25, 18 August 2007 (UTC) Reply

I would love to see why you think it obsolated. It is our portal page. For already involved people, it might be useless, but there are links to FAQs and contact information; information we want newly coming people to know. If the link is moved, links to those pages should be put in a different way. Without such changes, I don't think it appropriate to make it orphan. --Aphaia 17:40, 28 August 2007 (UTC) Reply

Yes, I see that links are useful. But what about transfering them on the translations page head? Keeping that informations splitted on two pages is not so useful and it might be bewildering to new translators. --Massimiliano L. 18:09, 28 August 2007 (UTC) Reply

Point taken: and if Translations contains those information, I have no reason to oppose your proposing change :) Could you please try to merge them? --Aphaia 18:24, 28 August 2007 (UTC) Reply
Check it now. Is it ok? I think translations pages need a cleanup because now are quite confused. Maybe I'll propose on Meta:Babel some changes to tidy up them. --Massimiliano 23:27, 28 August 2007 (UTC) Reply

Please remove a couple of items so search is on the main page

[edit ]
Latest comment: 16 years ago 4 comments3 people in discussion

Of all the side links, I use search most of all, as do probably 99% of the visitors here. This new format causes the search to be off the main page, requiring scrolling down. If just three items were removed or condensed, then the search would then be on the main page, alleviating the necessity of scrolling. Odessaukrain 17:30, 4 December 2007 (UTC) Reply

I think a better solution would be to move the search box higher in mediawiki:monobook.css rather than removing items from the sidebar. Angela 11:14, 7 December 2007 (UTC) Reply
Angela, from what I have read, I actually don't think that is technically possible. Everything below the search bar is controlled by modifying PHP (which few people have access too, and which is described as difficult to modify).
Everything above the search bar can easily be changed by modifying MediaWiki talk:Sidebar, if you are an administrator, that is.
User:Krog got a Barnstar from me after giving me a personal solution which will work for anyone who doesn't like this set up:
"you may personalize your "monobook" (for example, you can hide the menu "beyond the web" by adding the code #p-Beyond_the_web { display: none; } in your subpage monobook.css), or even the search directly in your browser (depending on its capabilities)."
It works.
I am so grateful that User:Krog was able to assist me, after months of trying to change this on two wikiprojects (www.mediawiki.org also).
From the icy or indifferent reception I got from both projects, everyone else who doesn't like this set up is simply out of luck, but at least, thanks to User:Korg, I'm satisfied.Odessaukrain 11:47, 10 December 2007 (UTC) Reply
Odessaukrain, I went to my /skins/MonoBook.php and switched the positions for the sections of php code for the sidebar and for the search form (around line 120 for mediawiki-1.11.0) and the search form has gone on top. I don't know what the developers think, but the problem may be that all wikimedia projects are currently using the same monobook skin and it is not easy to get wikimedia-wide consensus on this issue. I don't know. But I agree with you, and it may worth trying. Hillgentleman 17:59, 15 December 2007 (UTC) Reply

Latest comment: 16 years ago 3 comments1 person in discussion

The sidebar is overloaded. The sidebar should contain links which most people use. Links to special interest groups can be provided on the Main Page. Hillgentleman 17:42, 15 December 2007 (UTC) Reply

And I argue that "Goings-on", "Translations" and "Wikimedia News" should not go under the heading "navigation", which should contain only the principal links. They are more useful for "community" or "beyond the web". Hillgentleman 22:03, 9 January 2008 (UTC) Reply

I propose to remove the links to the help pages in Deutsch and Francais, unless people think they are very useful. These pages are accessible one more click away from the "other languages" bar at the top of help:help. Hillgentleman 22:35, 9 January 2008 (UTC) Reply

slimming down the sidebar

[edit ]
Latest comment: 15 years ago 2 comments2 people in discussion

Despite just adding another link to the sidebar, for Requests, I'd like to see a handful of links be merged or go away...

  • Translations/Babylon and WM Forum/Babel could preferably be merged (see how en:wp manages many village pumps via one parent page for instance).
  • Goings-on, Wikimedia News, Planet Wikimedia, and CommProjGrp can be merged somehow into a more useful news + updates portal
  • Meet Wikimedians, Events, and Wikimania : likewise!
  • 'DVDs' is out of place and not terribly informative -- it should be part of a larger page on wikimedia content offline, with links to all the options for same : offline readers, cds, dvds, books, &c
  • perhaps Requests should be part of a larger category too but I can't think of a better name or target.

The only difference from Wikipedia is that it'll be another WikiMedia wiki, so I'd like something as [[en:Page in english]], and my wiki's pagename would be "Página em português", so adding that command specifying "en" in the beginning would generate a sidebar link to the English wiki.

To be more clear my friend has a wiki about an upcoming MMORPG called Guild Wars 2, it's in portuguese and most of the content we translate from the official english wiki, and I'd like to reference every page to the official wiki's page. Since there may be variations in the *page name* I'd like that link to be synchronized accordingly.

One example at Wikipedia: Example (the 'Languages' tab)

I hope you understood, and help me! Thank you so much! :) - 177.0.27.252 06:53, 8 May 2012 (UTC) Reply
