Further improvement

Latest comment: 5 months ago 4 comments3 people in discussion

In my opinion this wish has some technical disadvantages and I will try to list them down to discuss them further as they are important to some people. The more important factor is accessibility of the interface Wikimedia is currently providing. I am no expert in colour blindness, but how would yellow coloured links affect colourblind people, would this colour provide enough contrast in white/dark theme of Wikipedia? Another important factor is the technical scalability. I could see such plugin working on the English Wikipedia which has far more featured content than any other project, but I don't think it would be really needed on smaller projects which may produce only a handful of featured pages. Instead I believe we should make this as a plugin, optional to the projects and let them decide if they would like to use it. A09 |(pogovor) 09:06, 28 July 2024 (UTC) Reply

Another drawback : not all Wikis use the same colors/icons. For example, on the French Wikipedia, the equivalent of Good Article is a grey star and the equivalent of Featured Article is a light yellow star. Goombiis (talk) 16:53, 29 July 2024 (UTC) Reply
Hello @A09 and @Goombiis, I appreciate the comments! πŸ™‚ Both suggestions you brought up about interface accessibility and scalability I hadn't thought of, but are very important, and has made me since expand and clarify the original wishlist description to try to cover these points. Based on your suggestions, I believe using color option #2 for Good Articles and color option #4 for Featured Articles is the way to go, while also scaling this proposal down to just English Wikipedia, but I'd love to hear anymore feedback or concerns you both may have. Cheers! Johnson524 (talk) 05:45, 30 July 2024 (UTC) Reply
Thanks for your further improvement of your wish and addressing my points. I feel this could be a good addition. Best regards! A09 |(pogovor) 08:35, 30 July 2024 (UTC) Reply

@Johnson524 could you please elaborate on what the colored links aim to achieve? I think this is an interesting wish, however a colored link may be challenging to implement based on accessibility guidelines. I'm curious if there's a different need here, which could be solved in a different way.. JWheeler-WMF (talk) 03:43, 30 July 2024 (UTC) Reply

Hello @JWheeler-WMF, and thank you for the comment πŸ™‚ Outside the ones already listed (being personal interest, and being able to observe how far a given topic is from becoming a Good or Featured one without clicking on individual wikilinks) I can't think of any, but I'm sure they exist. Granted, as this feature wouldn't be useful for all users, I think adding it as a preference option that can be toggled is the right way to go. I'd love to see this feature be implemented, if not on a multi-wiki scale as the discussion above points out, then just on English Wikipedia, and if you have any further comments I will try to respond in a timely manner. Cheers! Johnson524 (talk) 03:54, 30 July 2024 (UTC) Reply
@Johnson524 It sounds like a user script might be a viable way to go here, since it sounds like this would be different on different wikis, and likely to be primarily useful to a small number of users? Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 11:05, 15 November 2024 (UTC) Reply
@Samwalton9 (WMF) Thank you for taking the time to comment! I hadn't thought of this before now, mostly since I'm largely unfamiliar with user scripts, but this has the potential to work just as well as adding it as a preference (minus some of the accessibility). Cheers! Johnson524 (talk) 15:16, 15 November 2024 (UTC) Reply
@Johnson524 You could try requesting it at Wikipedia:User scripts/Requests on en.wiki, to see if anyone is interested in creating it. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 09:08, 18 November 2024 (UTC) Reply
@Samwalton9 (WMF) I'll go do that, but I still think I'd be beneficial to add this as an optional preference for all accounts. Cheers! Johnson524 (talk) 19:04, 18 November 2024 (UTC) Reply
Sure, just seeing if I can help you with a quick win for now! Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 19:47, 18 November 2024 (UTC) Reply

Yellow and orange

Latest comment: 4 months ago 5 comments3 people in discussion

There is a gadget that displays disambiguation links in orange. Caution should be taken to make the yellow used for FAs well-distinguishable from the aforementioned orange. Janhrach (talk) 09:24, 2 August 2024 (UTC) Reply

Easily changeable, perhaps a violet/dark red colour? A09 |(pogovor) 14:01, 2 August 2024 (UTC) Reply
Yes, violet would be probably preferable. Janhrach (talk) 14:07, 2 August 2024 (UTC) Reply
After some thought this would need to be a strong violet colour as clicked wikilinks already turn into some shade of purple. We shouldn't use same or very similar colours for two different things. A09 |(pogovor) 20:56, 2 August 2024 (UTC) Reply
Added Added: and sorry for the delay! Johnson524 (talk) 04:17, 12 August 2024 (UTC) Reply
