I have requested a JSTOR renewal. Thanks!Zigzig20s (talk) 13:33, 20 August 2018 (UTC) Reply
- I should have asked for renewal as well, I left some recent uses in the description. Currently I use JSOTR to send information for deletion procedures and the WikiWomen edit-a-thons, but that's mostly in the last year. In any case, I have been using it here and there on wikimedia platforms. i support however a rationalization of the accounts, when i have requested it I pointed out how in my local communities many of the users having this log in access did not share a lot of information, or were mostly involved in maintenance and not content-related activites--Alexmar983 (talk) 13:43, 20 August 2018 (UTC) Reply
Thanks for the talk page message. Unfortunately I don't have much time to use the JSTOR account for article creation at the moment, so please do feel free to redistribute it as soon as you would like (I hope to apply again when I have more time, but that might be a while!). Cheers! --Yodin T 13:41, 20 August 2018 (UTC) Reply
- @Yodin: Thanks for letting me know! As far as I understand your JSTOR account will remain active, it will just lose the subscription-only areas. When you want your account reactivated, assuming we have open positions, it can simply have that access reinstated :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:43, 20 August 2018 (UTC) Reply
- I'm in a similar position. I requested that when I was working in some particular area and I changed focus. I'm fine with it being redistributed to a more deserving editor.--Sphilbrick (talk) 13:46, 20 August 2018 (UTC) Reply

Although I had been granted access to JSTOR through Wikipedia Library, I never actually got the access to JSTOR account. After initial approval I had emailed Nikkimaria who was dealing with the issue. But I never heard back from her. I could never log in since I never got the requisite credentials. Feel free to redistribute the account I never had access to. Diptanshu 💬 14:26, 20 August 2018 (UTC) Reply

Thank-you for inviting me to apply for renewal of access to JSTOR. My situation is that I wrote sometime ago to give up the JSTOR access which I enjoyed via Wikipedia, because I was offered JSTOR access via an alumni organisation. As it turns out, the alternative level of access isn't so good, so I would prefer to have Wikipedia access again, if possible.--Thoughtfortheday (talk) 16:45, 20 August 2018 (UTC) Reply

I've got a message prompting me to renew my JSTOR account by visiting "user page" which returned an error, asking me to email about it which i did. Hello. I have just seen admin features have been turned on on the P&E Dashboard, and I was wondering whether we should be offered training as this is quite new. What do you think? Thanks. --Joalpe (talk) 00:01, 6 December 2018 (UTC) Reply
- @Joalpe: This is definitely possible! What training do you think you need, in addition to the existing dashboard admin training? Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 11:20, 6 December 2018 (UTC) Reply
- @Samwalton9 (WMF): Thanks for coming back to me. What I am thinking of is a tutorial on how the admin tools work (Recent Activity | Surveys | Campaigns | Analytics | Feedback | Alerts | Users), and what we are expected to do with them as admins. Thanks. --Joalpe (talk) 14:39, 6 December 2018 (UTC) Reply
- @Joalpe: That's fair - I spoke to Sage yesterday and we agreed the Admin interface is confusing and mostly not actually very useful to you. As such we've removed the link to /Admin from the navigation bar. You can still get to it at https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/admin if there's something you need, but otherwise most of what we'd like you to help with is helping users with every day problems and editing their programs/courses where required. Most of what is available through /admin is either things we don't want to be used (like surveys), or simply lists of all users/edits/uploads. I'll get an email sent out today to you all outlining what kind of help would be appreciated :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:30, 14 December 2018 (UTC) Reply

There are a couple of unusual looking accounts on the admin list: Nyeboah (with 8 global edits) and مصعب which doesn't exist. Would you please check? — xaosflux Talk 12:07, 10 March 2020 (UTC) Reply
- @Xaosflux: Thanks for checking on this! Nyeboah is a coordinator of Art + Feminism and so has a specific need for the admin tools rather than for providing general assistance. As for the second user, I was a little confused until I realised this was a signature mismatch. That's Avicenno. I'll update the list - they were added to the Dashboard correctly. - Thanks for the note - I'm a little bit concerned with people with no community experience on record getting access to the admin section on this tool, but I'm certainly not "the decider" - perhaps a new access level could be developed in the future for these sort of use cases - assuming making someone a "Campaign Organizer" doesn't actually work? If it does, wouldn't that be sufficient? — xaosflux Talk 13:28, 10 March 2020 (UTC) Reply

Hi again :) A miss that still requires local action especially on the English Wikipedia is that programs often want to bypass autoconfirmation thresholds for their attendees - so that users can upload non-free media, directly author new articles, and skip captchas. Not sure if this is common on other content projects. So what ends up happening is that the organizers still end up having to go to w:en:WP:PERM and ask for access to grant "confirmed" to their attendees. Is this functionality something that might be a good idea to add in to the dashboard tools? — xaosflux Talk 13:28, 10 March 2020 (UTC) Reply
- That's a nice idea! My only initial concern is that it's a more concerning vector for abuse than unlimited account creation, but it's definitely worth investigating to explore potential solutions. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 14:48, 10 March 2020 (UTC) Reply
- Basically on enwiki, if someone says they are going to run an event we pretty much give them access to do this on demand, we rarely decline unless they are themselves a brand-new editor. Personally, I don't think any brand new editor should be doing those things because I've seen so many years of quality while people are learning and shouldn't have their first things be to create an article or deal with fair-use media; but in practice I try to stretch good faith as far as possible! — xaosflux Talk 15:38, 10 March 2020 (UTC) Reply

Hi, you were the only person I knew to ask (because of the library platform improvements) - what just happened to the library? A lot of the resources seem to have vanished. All of the Oxford Online are gone, not sure what else. Schazjmd (talk) 00:39, 13 July 2021 (UTC) Reply
- @Schazjmd: We temporarily turned off Oxford University Press resources (of which there were ~11 different collections) because our access expired on their end. We're just waiting for them to reactivate it and then we'll turn those back on - we don't have a good way to display messages in the library at the moment and figured it would be less confusing to temporarily remove them than to have nonfunctional collections :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 07:45, 13 July 2021 (UTC) Reply

I noticed a recent use of the expression "free reliable sources" which is very surprising. These sources are obviously not free, otherwise they probably wouldn't be paywalled. Depending on the sources, it's also dubious whether they can be considered "reliable", but it's certainly wrong to imply that paywalled academic works are more reliable than open access works.
I hope in the future we can avoid communication which runs counter the Wikimedia mission. Best, Nemo 15:26, 16 February 2022 (UTC) Reply
- Thanks for the feedback Nemo. In the interests of brevity and being understandable we sometimes have to take language shortcuts like this. We think that most readers will read 'free' to mean gratis rather than libre and for folks expecting differently it should be fairly quickly obvious from the list of content in the library that we mean the former. We're also using 'reliable sources' to reflect Wikimedia communities' definition of reliability, rather than in an academic sense. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 16:46, 23 February 2022 (UTC) Reply
The detailed description is w:en:Wikipedia_talk:The_Wikipedia_Library#Library_access_issues. It seems that my account has been suspended to login TWL. I guess the reason maybe related to my using open-proxy to aceess Wikimedia. Hi @Samwalton9 (WMF), unfortunately we lack a number of important tools on Urdu Wikipedia including AfDclsoer. It is difficult to nominate articles for deletion because we do not have any tools. Could you please advise where should we begin from? I'm not a tech guy so I can not make any scripts on own but I would be glad to provide Urdu translations. ─ The Aafī (talk) 08:04, 23 January 2023 (UTC) Reply
- @TheAafi Thanks for getting in touch - this is interesting as we're just starting to work on a project where we want to learn more about patrolling and deletion on Wikimedia projects. @SD0001 might be able to help locate some gadgets and tools which are easier to import to your project to help with things like this (e.g. Twinkle). How do you currently nominate articles for deletion, without a tool? Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:25, 23 January 2023 (UTC) Reply
- @Samwalton9 (WMF) Tagging articles for AfD is quite hard. We have to visit ur:ویکیپیڈیا:مضامین برائے حذف and manually do everything from there onwards. Also since automatic tools don't work currently, it is difficult to find "current open AfDs". I am not honestly aware how many open AfDs there are currently. Localization of Twinkle is something that can help us - but there is not any good tech guy either on Urdu Wikipedia or at DCW with which I'm concerned. ─ The Aafī (talk) 13:00, 23 January 2023 (UTC) Reply

- @Samwalton9 (WMF), though there has been a page about CSD at ur:ویکیپیڈیا:فوری حذف شدگی کے معیارات, we do not have a developed system. Although, certain pages get deleted speedily, the existing bureaucracy and administration on the wiki is not much interest in betterment. I am myself not an admin but an "eliminator" which I became due to my works besides the mere article creation. However, it is hopeful that we overcome this very soon.
You' ve made wrong achieving. My proposal is about technical feature that helps to fix legal issues, it's not just a legal feature. Please, restore my proposal. I think that community must decide whether this proposal needs to be realised by voting, since many people use fix dummy edits to fix attribution. D6194c-1cc (talk) 11:20, 2 February 2023 (UTC) Reply
- @D6194c-1cc I've clarified the decline reason. Per my comment to you there, if technical changes are being proposed for legal reasons, but the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department doesn't agree, then it seems there's no reason to make the change. I asked in the wish if there is some other reason you would like to see a change to attribution but you said you were only concerned with the legal implications, so I archived it. Is there some other benefit to making this change? Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 14:32, 3 February 2023 (UTC) Reply
- Legal purposes don't mean that feature isn't useful. If somebody want to find out the source of the edit without attribution he will find added text and might try to add dummy edit. If another user already fixed attribution, then duplicates might appear. This feature makes edit history more convenient. Alternatively comments to edit summary may be more useful. - @D6194c-1cc That makes sense! If you can update the description of that wish to focus more on the benefits you just described I'll move it back to the category :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 16:34, 3 February 2023 (UTC) Reply

Hi @Samwalton9 (WMF): Affaf (DCW), who would be working on DCW's Leadership Development and Skills Infrastructure Plan from 1 July onwards might need to access certain resources through TWL. These resources include Brill, CUP, JSTOR and Project Muse. Is that possible, and if yes, does she need to submit an application by loggin in to the TWL database? Please let me know and I will ask her to do what she needs to do. Best regards, ─ Aafi @ DCW (talk ) 13:37, 27 June 2023 (UTC) Reply
- @TheAafi (DCW) Unfortunately this isn't possible, as we're only able to provide access to editors who meet the requirements, and for activity which is direct contributions to Wikimedia projects. Sorry! Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 14:55, 27 June 2023 (UTC) Reply
Hi Samwalton,
In the German Wikipedia there is a concept called "Technical Wishes", I have a wish for the Wikipedia Libary, but I saw that Technical Wishes in the German Wikipedia only refers to the German Wikipedia. Do I need to contact you for a wish, or someone else?
My wish would be to add a feature to the Wikipedia search where you only have to type in the name or doi e and it will take you directly to the PDF. (Like Sci-hub and alike) That would be a big quality of life improvement, as you wouldn't have to click through menus anymore. (Direct search as with Sci-hub 1-2 clicks, Wikipedia Libary, 4-5 clicks).

- @The Other Karma You're right that the German Wikipedia technical wishes process isn't somewhere we monitor for The Wikipedia Library, but letting me know is definitely an option! I think this is a good idea and we already had a Phabricator ticket at T290846 for a similar topic. I've expanded it to include the idea of DOIs, I agree this would be an improvement! - Thanks for adding, I have since also seen that PDF full texts are made available via EBSCO (not perfect but functional). Maybe that has changed since the last time I searched for something. About the ticket, you could just change the text in the background of the search from "Enter any words" to Enter DOI, Name or Url to search. And I have another question, why is JSTOR so slow? When I want to use the site, the page is still not loaded after 4 minutes? (Tested in Chrome, and Firefox) The Other Karma (talk) 13:22, 20 August 2023 (UTC) Reply
- @The Other Karma Hmm, I'm not sure about JSTOR. It loads a number of images, which makes it a little slower than some other sites for me, but it certainly loads a lot faster than 4 minutes for me. Have you tried deleting cookies for oclc.org? This might help. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 10:01, 22 August 2023 (UTC) Reply
- Thx, for your help. Deleting the cookies for oclc.org did indeed help. The search bar is now nearly instantly available. But searching for something here "Beautiful, Borrowed, and Bent: "Boys’ Love" as Girls’ Love in Shôjo Manga" it stil still very slow, in compared to Elvesier/Sicence Direct, which is nearly instantaneously. (Tested in Chrome [cookies deleted], and Firefox [cookies not deleted, but mostly not used for Wikipedia library].
- I also try to get in touch with Wikipedia colleges, in the German Wikipedia, maybe it is location specific. The Other Karma (talk) 17:53, 22 August 2023 (UTC) Reply

@Samwalton9 (WMF), would you please have a quick look at: I see the output to those translate tags are not displayed as they should:
- Translations:Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan/2023-2024/Product & Technology/OKRs/109/ja
- Translations:Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan/2023-2024/Product & Technology/OKRs/110/ja
- Translations:Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan/2023-2024/Product & Technology/OKRs/115/ja
Thank you, and allow me to ping @Pols12, whom I respect as being in the know. Cheers, Omotecho (talk) 15:19, 14 October 2023 (UTC) Reply
- Fixed, @Omotecho: that only needed a
<nowiki/>
tag to avoid three consecutive opening brackets. I have included the brackets in the translation unit by the way, so translators can localize them, because I’m not sure it is identically understood through all languages. -- Pols12 (talk) 16:29, 14 October 2023 (UTC) Reply- @Pols12, thank you so much for your swift and crisp judgement. Hi @Samwalton9 (WMF), I've noticed that there's been no response to the latest sign-ups - including mine - for potential coordinators of The Wikipedia Library here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/Coordinators/Signup. @Nikkimaria also told me that you are in contact with Wikimedia Deutschland about collaborations. I would like to support here as well. Are you still looking for coordinators for this project? Best, Wedderkop (talk) 13:09, 10 March 2024 (UTC) Reply
- @Wedderkop Sorry for the delay in responding! So we work with WMDE on German language partnerships and we figured it might make sense for you to work with them rather than us directly - we need to chat with them to see what they think, I'll get back to you soon :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 20:27, 14 March 2024 (UTC) Reply
- Don't worry @Samwalton9 (WMF), I'm already in touch with the WMDE colleagues :). --Wedderkop (talk) 20:34, 14 March 2024 (UTC) Reply
