Welcome to the strategy conversation

For 16 years, Wikimedians have worked together to build the largest free knowledge resource in human history. Today, we are more than a group of websites. We are a movement with values and a powerful vision: a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.

As a movement, we are starting a discussion to start defining the future role of Wikimedia in the world.

You are warmly invited to join the conversation.

This page is currently a draft. More information pertaining to this may be available on the talk page.

Step 1: Reviewing what we know today

What do we need to know to have an informed discussion?

This document provides a high-level overview of what every participant in the discussion should know about the movement and the future. It is recommended to review it before answering the question.

Step 2: Thinking about the future

The big question

Our goal as a movement is to identify a direction that aligns and inspires us all on our path to 2030. The direction will consist of a few focus areas that describe the strategic priorities for the movement.

The big question that we seek to answer is the following:

What will unite and inspire us as a movement for the next 15 years?

  • For example, some potential ways to think about this question are:
    • What direction could accelerate our progress toward our movement’s shared vision for a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge?
    • What trends might impact how people access, use, and share knowledge?
    • What needs should the Wikimedia movement meet for the world?
    • What is the future we want to build together in the next 15 years?
    • What is the most important thing the Wikimedia Movement should do in the future?
    • Why will we (still) exist in 2030 and what will we be known for?
    • What is Wikimedia's contribution to making the world a better place in 2030?

Next steps: Synthesis and cycles of discussion

Summaries & sharing of information

The discussions will be continuously summarized and sorted by topic. The major points of discussion will be shared across wikis to make it easier to know what others are thinking across the movement.

Timeline and process

We are currently in the first cycle of discussion. There will be two other cycles that you may join. In the next cycles, we will try to converge on the direction and focus areas by August 2017.
