About

Trollface Incidents refers to a series of new wave Trollface Rage Comics that narrate the story of various real and fictional events, referring to them in [date] [event name] [incident] format. Originating from a viral version of the Cover Yourself in Oil meme, the format was popularized online in early 2021.

Origin

On November 27th, 2020, during the peak of the Cover Yourself in Oil meme format, Twitter [1] user @ebola_granola posted a creepypasta-style Cover Yourself in Oil comic in which the last panel referred to "Heaven Stairway" incident predicted to happen in New York City in May 2021. The post received over 1,200 retweets and 6,200 likes (shown below). In the following month, the image received viral spread through reposts, spawning memes about the predicted event.

Spread

On December 16th, 2020, iFunny [2] user MilkJugMan posted the first derivative meme utilizing the format, referencing an "Aurora Woods" incident predicted to happen in August 2021 (shown below, left). The post received 130 smiles and, similar to the "Heaven Stairway" incident, spawned a series of memes specifically about the predicted event.

On January 5th, the VK[3] page БОБ posted the first meme that referenced a widely known, albeit fictional, event. The Half-Life meme received 14 likes (shown below, right), with January 7th reposts in VK[4] [5] groups Всякая Атмта and manarek gaining over 360 and 200 likes, respectively. A January 19th, 2021, repost by Instagram [6] user woomy_2 gained over 2,200 likes.

Prior to early February 2021, several more versions of the meme referencing events made up by the posters were made, including January 14th, 2021, post by Redditor [7] UnRenardRouge and January 25th, 2021, post by Instagram[8] user fashionruinedmylife, which is also the first known post within the format to incorporate Trollge as the last panel.

On February 8th, 2021, Redditor[9] 69WeedNose420 posted the first Trollface Incident meme about a real event, with their post narrating the story Ninja's Times Square Floss Fail in a humorous fashion. The post (shown below) received over 23,800 upvotes in the /r/okbuddyretard subreddit prior to being removed.

In the following days, the format achieved a viral presence in /r/okbuddyretard, later spreading further, with users creating memes about real and fictional events and popular memes. On February 26th, 2021, gimmick Twitter account Troll Face Incidents (@TrollIncidents) was created,[10] collecting examples of the meme.

Trollge

Trollge refers to an unsmiling Trollface partially obscured with shadow. Circulated since July 2020, Trollge gained its name and popularization from a series of creepypasta-style countdown videos that warn the viewer about the upcoming arrival of an entity named "Trollge" and advice to seek shelter. The videos were posted in /r/196 and /r/okbuddyretard subreddits in mid-November 2020 and received further spread online through reposts.
