Funding for Kalvos & Damian is always needed. Composers, show hosts, and website builders Dennis Báthory-Kitsz and David Gunn have worked more than eight years to make K&D a valuable resource. Some of its activities -- such as building detailed composer pages -- are being taken over by the composers themselves. That's good. And sites like MP3.com make it possible to hear many composers in fine, high-fidelity streams. That's good, too.

But having a large archive of interviews and sound clips is even more important now than when we started in 1995. There is a huge body of "competitive" work on line, mostly pop music, crowding out the visibility of new concert/classical/electroacoustic (etc.) music once again. The mainstream media have not given their attention to the remarkable place of new music on the Internet 'stage', but rather of the Internet as one more distribution channel. Though expected, it is still astounding to us. The interactivity and community nature is being replaced by a sales mentality -- even MP3.com has begun posting royalty earnings and popularity charts.

We welcome change. But it also means that Kalvos & Damian needs to provide its service in a stronger way, and sometimes a more costly way. Because of costs, we have been limited to interviews and guests from the eastern United States and Western Europe. We struggle always with on-line space. The licensing issues undreamed of in 1995 have become a nightmare in 2000.

If K&D has a purpose, and we believe it does (as do both ASCAP and The Argosy Foundation, who awarded K&D honors in the same week in October 2000), then seeing those purposes through becomes increasingly time-consuming and costly. We will continue with our show and site, but would like it to continue to have meaning for composers and their audiences in more than a deejay way. What is Kalvos & Damian's New Music Bazaar?

Kalvos & Damian's New Music Bazaar is a radio show and website bringing composers to the wider world through their music, interviews, mentoring, pictures, photos, artwork, essays, biographies, attitudes, catalogs and ideas. Despite the "Bazaar" in its name, K&D doesn't sell anything, and isn't a commercial venture of any kind. The Bazaar presents the eclectic world of newly composed music in a try-it-you'll-like-it format, connects composers with each other and with audiences, and develops special programs for schools and organizations. The Bazaar is sponsored by organizations in our Vermont home -- WGDR-FM Community Radio, the Consortium of Vermont Composers, the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble, and Goddard College, and is produced by Malted/Media Productions.

What are the K&D projects?

!! Kalvos & Damian are always stretching for ways to bring all kinds of listeners to today's concert, chamber, electroacoustic, and performance music. Among them...
• The K&D Weekly Broadcast/Cybercast. The heart of Kalvos & Damian's New Music Bazaar is the weekly program that presents new music and interviews, with new releases, essays, and special mixes and collages. The program's web resources include weekly and seasonal playlists that lead visitors to thousands of new music recordings and the record labels played on the show. There are also hundreds of recordings provided by composers and available nowhere else but on K&D.
• Special Cybercasts. K&D produces special programs. Most important was the September 12, 1998, groundbreaking live program from Amsterdam, the first of its kind cybercast and broadcast using Internet streams. K&D also supports American Music Week and Electroacoustic Music Week with special programming.
• Composer Mentoring. In cooperation with arts and education organizations and schools, K&D brings composers online to guide schoolchildren in writing music. More than two dozen composers have participated in the K&D/WebProject effort, with composers and software selected by K&D. We continue our mentoring through email exchanges, as well as with the K&D shows inclusion as part of academic curricula.
• Live Concerts. In-studio concerts open to the public and broadcast live bring one of the great traditions of broadcast radio to the Internet. K&D has presented live in-studio concerts and live-on-tape performances done for K&D by Phil Kline, Martha Mooke, Fred Ho, Pauline Oliveros, Scott MX Turner, Dennis Darrah, Roddy Schrock, Tadashi Usami, Robert Duckworth, Howard Jonathan Frederics and Lori Joachim Fredrics, Rip Keller, Anita Beckmann, James Bohn, Tom Heasley, Cory Carlick, Michael Boriskin and Barbara Wellspring, as well as a complete opera written and produced by the students of Middlebury College. And there was the series of broadcasts of the entire Ought-One Festival of NonPop.
• On-Line Archives. Music and interview clips appear on K&D composer pages, and more than 180 complete interviews with composers are archived in the largest on-line resource of its kind. There is also in preparation a new section of pre-interviews -- interviews recorded but not yet broadcast. This archive also includes the first and most important musical summary of reactions to the 9/11 tragedy in the U.S., with compositions contributed from around the world. The 9/11 pages were featured in the New York Times.
• Essays, Artwork, and Photographs. In its composer essays section, K&D also include drawings and photographs along with important writings by composers as diverse as John Trubee, Batya Weinbaum, Clarence Barlow, and John McGuire. We also list our software and hardware tools and offer a selection of new and historic sound encoders and players.
• Composer Resources. K&D sponsors Dan Albertson's Living Composers Project at K&D's website. (Dan's list has superseded K&D's own composer resource list, which was provided by 1995-1999.)
• The K&D Tours. Vermont is isolated, so K&D travels to artistic centers. Interview tours have included Toronto, New York City, Amsterdam, Cologne, Paris, Brussels, Los Angeles (August 2003), San Francisco (August 2003) and other locales. When Kalvos or Damian travel individually, they also collect interviews.
• Composer Pages. Unique composer pages are part of the K&D project. Not only are music and interview clips included on most pages, but we also present composers' writings, more than 40 of them found only on the K&D website.
• Transcriptions. Listening is not always the most efficient way of hearing from composers, nor is it the best documentation for many uses. So K&D have embarked on a transcription project which will present in print form all the interviews conducted on K&D shows. This project began in part with transcriptions of Matthew Fields, Ann Southam, and others, and will continue with Barbara Benary, Barry Drogin, and many others. The goal is a complete archive of transcriptions, and a book that looks at composition from 1995-2005.
• Interactive Offerings. There is a K&D discussion board for posting concert info and other exchanges as well as a live discussion room.
• Fun Stuff. It's not all serious business at K&D. Aside from being the "car guys of new music", K&D also maintain a few special features, including Best of the Bazaar Sound Mixes, Show IDs by Composers, The Distorted Composer Page, The Musical Bullshit Generator, the now-classic Golden Bruce Award, and our own Listener Response Awards.

Who are Kalvos and Damian?

!! Kalvos and Damian are the character names for K&D hosts and composers Dennis Báthory-Kitsz and David Gunn. Dennis is the K&D webmaster as well as the founder of Malted/Media, and the key organizer of the composer mentoring project. He has created the performance pieces Echo and Stoneworld/Grey , and has a recent CD entitled Detritus of Mating . His past includes such events as the Delaware Valley Festival of the Avant-Garde. David is the mastermind behind Leisure Weasel World, and the author of short stories and other writings, and has an upcoming CD of his music performed by the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble entitled Somewhere East of Topeka. The two composers have collaborated not only on musical projects like the chamber opera Plasm over ocean , but also on two books, the informative and humorous The Middle-Aged Hiker and the sci-fi novel The Karmora Papers . They are also co-directors of Il Gruppo Nuke Jitters, a contemporary music performance ensemble, and work as writers and editors for The Transitive Empire.

Where can I hear the Bazaar?

!! The Bazaar is broadcast live every Saturday afternoon from 2:30 to 4:30 (1830 to 2030 GMT) on WGDR in Central Vermont on 91.1 FM and via our live cybercast through WGDR. A nearly complete archive is here on KalvoNet. Check out our homepage for regular announcements as archived shows are posted. We can also be heard on WOMR 92.1 FM in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and other radio stations will also be carrying the Bazaar in the next year.

What Support is Sought?

Outcomes: The K&D Goals

!! Many media projects -- especially those on the web -- are 'hobby' projects or fan sites. Kalvos & Damian's New Music Bazaar is a serious effort to create a live and archived look at composers and music composition at the end of the century. We measure our effectiveness by the volume of email we exchange, the quality of the email, honest site 'numbers', and valuable acknowledgments of our work.

Both the New York Times and the Village Voice have noted K&D's resources; the Times devoted a sidebar to the K&D show on Conlon Nancarrow. We have won numerous site awards including the 2000 ASCAP-Deems Taylor Internet Award. Our site is accessible by W3C standards.
