Development Mode in IIS for Asp.net projects

Swapping to Development environment will display more detailed information about the error that occurred. To set the ASPNETCORE_ENVIRONMENT environment variable in IIS, you can follow these steps:

  1. Open the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager on your server.
  2. Navigate to the specific website or application where you want to set the environment variable.
  3. Select the "Configuration Editor" feature, which you can find in the main window or under the "Management" section.
  4. In the "Section" dropdown, select system.webServer/aspNetCore.
  5. In the "From" dropdown, select ApplicationHost.config.
  6. Scroll down and locate the "environmentVariables" element.
  7. Click on the "..." button next to the "environmentVariables" element.
  8. In the "Collection Editor" window, click the "Add" button to add a new environment variable.
  9. In the "Name" field, enter ASPNETCORE_ENVIRONMENT.
  10. In the "Value" field, enter Development.
  11. Click "OK" to save the environment variable.
  12. Close the "Configuration Editor" window.
  13. Restart the website or application in IIS for the changes to take effect.

By setting the ASPNETCORE_ENVIRONMENT environment variable to Development, you enable the development mode, which provides more detailed error information for debugging purposes. However, it's important to remember that the development mode should not be enabled for deployed applications as it may expose sensitive information to end-users.
