Seeking a Free Lance Drupal Developer for Newspaper Website

Posted by danielpkennedy on January 27, 2014 at 5:58pm

I'm working with a small radio station that currently has a daily e-news paper and adds news to their website manually using Dreamweaver.

We are considering Drupal CMS, and believe this module seems to have what we need to create the site we are looking for:
http://theopensourcenewspaper.org

We are looking for any recommendations for a developer that has experience with the module and would be able to help us transition the site over to Drupal.

Thank you for any help / guidance in this matter.

Is anyone familiar with the web widgets module?

Posted by pkchoo on April 5, 2013 at 11:24pm

I'm just wondering if anyone here has used the web widgets module being developed by Phase II technologies on a Drupal 7 site? (http://drupal.org/project/web_widgets)

It's still in the alpha stages, but I wanted to see if someone could share their thoughts on its use. Being able to export content from a Drupal site via embedable widgets would have lots of value for a news site.

Does it worked well?... Is it easy to export/embed?... How is the styling was handled?..., etc...

Thanks.

How to keep views slideshow from switching when playing video?

Posted by pkchoo on December 21, 2012 at 8:17am

I've created a views slideshow with photos and videos, but when I play the video, the slideshow switches to the next slide before the video gets a chance to finish. How do I keep the views slideshow from switching slides when a video is playing?

I tried to set the slideshow to "pause on click", as opposed to "pause on hover", but that doesn't seem to help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Google Font Implementation

Posted by sinergia on March 11, 2012 at 6:57pm

Google Fonts is an absolutely awesome collection of web fonts that you may use in your HTML web pages without any restrictions.

These fonts not only look more beautiful than the common typefaces like Arial and Verdana but they are more readable as well since the fonts have been designed specifically for the web. Also, all Google web fonts are offered under the Open Font License meaning you may use them even in commercial projects without having to worry about licensing issues.

Help a Newbie Understand Panels?

Posted by ithacaindy on February 27, 2012 at 3:29pm

I like the demos of what can be accomplished with Panels. The details, however - which include lots of coding - don't seem to fit the promise of a drag-and-drop interface. For instance, I create a panel, but can't view it with the URL I provided. Also, I create a node panel (to adjust the layout of how an article displays), yet the panel appears in the default "content" position of my theme, creating in effect, a node within a node.

Are there any hand-holding tutorials out there to explain the basics of Panels?

Image Captions with Drupal 7 and Views 3?

Posted by ithacaindy on February 23, 2012 at 11:29pm

I'm having a heckuva time understanding how to display captions with Drupal 7 and Views 3. I'm using the default imagfield with the title as the caption. However, when I go into Views 3, I can display only the full content or teasers - no mention of the imagefield's title.

I know this is a constant issue - how are other publishers handling this - and is there a 'recipe' available?

Making Money on Newspaper Sites

Posted by Pica on November 3, 2011 at 4:51pm

For 10 years I've helped small daily and weekly newspapers have successful websites, (400?) I have helped those clients with the software, but the main part of my consulting was the revenue - how the newspaper leveraged their traffic for income.
I have worked with the largest software development companies in the US newspaper industry. Recently I have decided the future is Open Source for smaller newspapers, my niche.

How to create a back to view button from node?

Posted by pkchoo on October 22, 2011 at 2:55am

Hello,

I have a pretty standard view that lists a bunch of node teasers, which when clicked, goes to the node page.

Obviously, the user can click the browser back button or the menu link for the view, but, it would be a better user experience to have a back link at the end of the node that takes the user back to the view.

Is there some standard method of doing that in Drupal. Do i just create a field for the node that links back to the view? I'm working D7.

Thank you.

Getting editorial content to Drupal?

Posted by Anonymous on October 17, 2011 at 2:45am

Hi all, great group here, I'm learning a lot.

I'm not a web developer, but I've got a bit of Drupal experience and am trying to facilitate a changeover from the current, old-school CMS we have at a small English-language newspaper in Taiwan. My main point of confusion is how to get the editorial content we are working with into Drupal.

Photo Essay

Posted by ejohns on October 11, 2011 at 3:11pm

Hey -

I am looking at setting up a way for my newspaper site to handle "photo essays" or articles that are simply a collection of still photos.

I have played with Views and the Views Slideshow module and achieved the desired end result, however that will work for a one-time configuration. I am looking for a solution that will support multiple "photo essays" that are added on the fly to the site...

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!
